Los Alamos National Laboratory Inspection Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700-$168,200)

Your role will involve contributing to cutting-edge engineering R&D activities and operations to uphold quality engineering standards. You will play a pivotal part in achieving milestones across multiple projects, focusing on inspection development, design, and quality evidence capture. Your responsibilities will extend to developing robust inspection processes and creating Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) fixtures and programs that adhere to rigorous quality control standards. Furthermore, your input in suggesting procedures, standards, and equipment will significantly enhance workflow efficiency and product quality maintenance. Your expertise in 3-D design and modeling capabilities will also be put to good use.

Depending on your experience, you will be placed in either the Inspection Readiness or Inspection Engineering team. As an inspection engineering R&D engineer, your primary function will be to spearhead the development, monitoring, and maintenance of inspection and test processes, procedures, and equipment utilized in regular production. The Inspection Readiness team will rely on your involvement in establishing and upkeeping capabilities, along with developing and conducting initial testing of measurement tools to ensure their effectiveness and efficiency in supporting process development and production. While the operational deployment of the measurement tools will fall under the purview of the inspection engineering team and inspectors, your role as an inspection readiness R&D Engineer will be instrumental in defining, standardizing, setting up, and maintaining our measurement system analysis capability and measurement assurance efforts.

R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300-$206,300)

In addition to the aforementioned duties, you will spearhead, commence, and uphold inspection engineering activities and processes, with specific engineering responsibilities in the realms of inspection process development and operations. Your role will involve devising intricate solutions, introducing new technologies, streamlining inspection cycle times, and optimizing production yield rates. You will have the independence to define assignment objectives, recognize and integrate emerging technologies, and formulate technical strategies. Depending on your experience, this position will be assigned to either the Inspection Readiness team or the Inspection Engineering team.

What You Need

Minimum Requirements

Technical Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in designing, planning, and executing projects related to inspection, including coordinate measuring machines, laser interferometers, optical measurement techniques, and open setup techniques.

Inspection Development : Proficient in creating robust inspection processes, encompassing the interpretation of engineering blueprints, sketches, specifications, and related data, as well as the specification of inspection equipment, characterization of process variables, and the consistent maintenance of process performance.

Problem Solving: Skilled in collaborating with inspectors, quality engineers, and engineering teams to effectively address complex inspection engineering or measurement-related challenges.

In addition to having advanced knowledge of the R&D Engineer 2 requirements, the R&D Engineer 3 must have the following:

Expert in measurement and testing systems: adept at providing technical leadership for coordinate measuring machines, laser interferometers, optical measurement techniques, and open setup techniques.

Education requirements for R&D Eng. 2: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education requirements for R&D Eng. 3: Position requires a master's degree in engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following qualifications and skills:

Manufacturing Expertise: Extensive experience in designing, planning, and executing manufacturing projects.

Quality Standards Proficiency: Familiarity with ASME quality assurance standards such as Y14.5 and NQA-1, as well as NAP 401.1 and DOE Order 414.D.

Software Proficiency: Proficient in using software packages such as Quindos, Calypso, or PC-DMIS; PTC CREO; or SolidWorks.

Equipment Proficiency : Demonstrated proficiency in using and programming Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs). Proven hands-on experience in repairing or assembling machine tools to accuracies of less than one micron.

Calibration Expertise: Hands-on experience in calibrating measurement equipment - Measurement Assurance Program (MAP) Experience: Extensive experience in independently or collaboratively establishing a measurement assurance and/or measurement system analysis program.

Work Location: The position is based on-site in Los Alamos, NM.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for other jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
