What You Will Do
The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Radiation Protection Program is looking for Health Physicists to join in providing radiation protection support to Support LANL's crucial nuclear security, environmental monitoring, and research missions. Opportunities exist in programs supporting External Dosimetry, Radiation Instrumentation and Calibration, Training, and Technical and Regulatory Compliance.
As part of the LANL Radiation Protection Program, you will have the chance to join:
External Dosimetry Program
• Manage dosimetry services for over 8,000 radiation workers.
• Ensure compliance with quality, technical, and regulatory requirements.
• Deliver accurate, timely, and reliable results to support LANL operations.
Radiation Instrumentation and Calibration Program
• Maintain and calibrate over 10,000 radiation detection instruments.
• Provide NIST-traceable photon and neutron field calibrations for dose measurement devices.
• Oversee instrument selection, testing, repair, and calibration.
Radiation Protection Programs
• Develop protocols, training materials, and procedures for radiation safety.
• Assist in maintaining Radiation Protection is compliant with 10 CFR 835
• Conduct inspections and assessments to evaluate program implementation.
• Manage radioactive sealed sources and radiation-generating devices.
Collaboration and Innovation
• Work with program members, management, and stakeholders to improve processes.
• Create innovative training materials and ensure adherence to high safety standards.
• Provide technical expertise and participate in programmatic assessments.
The LANL Radiation Protection Program support for a broad range of activities in support of the Laboratory's nuclear security, environmental monitoring, and research missions. Health Physicists in these programs interact with program members, management, and customers to assist with implementation of the programs, provide technical expertise, develop processes and procedures, training, and programmatic assessments.
These positions will be filled at either the Health Physicist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Health Physicist 1, $92,300 - $151,000
You will work with the Program to provide quality, defensible, radiation protection services to the Laboratory. Your responsibilities will include review of technical data: development and implementation of programs to meet 10 CFR 835, 10 CFR 71, and local radiological implementing documents, investigating and resolving issues, conducting studies and preparing reports on technical issues, developing procedures and technical basis documents, and taking an active role in development and implementation of program improvements.
Health Physicist 2, $101,700 - $168,200
In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be expected to provide leadership to early career Health Physicists within the Program, you will ensure the delivery of high-quality, defensible radiation protection services to the Laboratory while providing strategic direction and oversight. Your responsibilities will include providing expert level guidance to a team, reviewing technical data, developing and implementing regulatory requirements, and ensure robust issue resolution processes. You will spearhead investigations and studies on complex technical issues, prepare detailed reports, and guide the development of procedures and technical basis documents. Additionally, you will play a pivotal role in driving program enhancements, fostering innovation, and ensuring continuous improvement in alignment with regulatory and operational objectives while guiding resource logistics. Your experience will empower the team to achieve excellence in radiation protection services across the Laboratory missions.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
• Experience with implementation of programs to meet 10 CFR 835 requirements or other regulatory requirements;
• Entry-level expertise in health physics, particularly in dosimetry and the legal requirements of radiation protection programs, including the implementation and management of such programs;
• Entry-level experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection;
• Entry-level skills in conceptualizing and communicating radiation protection concepts to technical and non-technical personnel.
• Oral and written communication skills; and
• Ability to obtain a Q clearance.
Additional Job Requirements for Health Physicist 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Expert-level knowledge of health physics as it relates to dosimetry and implementation of radiation protection programs;
• Expert-level skills to conceptualize and communicate radiation protection concepts and results to both technical and non-technical personnel.
• Expert-level skills in leadership, mentoring, and coordination of personnel; and
• Expert-level experience in developing and implement new programs or processes.
Education/Experience at lower level:
• Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities.
Education/Experience at higher level:
Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in a relevant field
• Experience administering the requirements of the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP), or equivalent accreditation processes, as applied to external dosimetry programs;
• Experience with data management systems, SQL, Oracle server databases and creating SQL Queries; and
• American Board of Health Physics Certification (CHP).
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
