The Physical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy group (C-PCS) is seeking a strong candidate who is interested in the physical chemistry and/or spectroscopy of a variety of materials relevant to national security. The selected candidate must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in a university of good standing. The candidate will work with scientists in C-PCS on a variety of projects. The candidate is expected to perform hands-on laboratory work involving one or more of the following: chemical synthesis, laser spectroscopy, high magnetic fields, energetic materials, and/or radiological materials. The candidate will also have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across the laboratory. Chemistry division is an organization that has multiple disciplines on a large range of scientific topics and contributes to LANL missions significantly.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of basic principles one or more of the following: chemical synthesis, laser spectroscopy, high magnetic fields, energetic materials, and/or radiological materials.

  • Experience in safe laboratory procedures.

  • Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices.

Education/Experience: Currently enrolled in a PhD program in the physical sciences (chemistry, physics, optical science, etc.) other related field. Must be enrolled in 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Qualifications: Students selected for GRA internship in Chemistry Sciences are most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and

  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
