What You Will Do

The Genomics and Bioanalytics Group (B-GEN) within Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)'s Bioscience Division is seeking one or more experienced Scientists to join our Group. B-GEN houses LANL's flagship capabilities in applied genomics, sequencing, and bioinformatics and applies these skills to tackle a variety of energy and national security challenges. Research in B-GEN spans next generation sequencing, metagenomics, digital biosecurity, multi-omics, big data analytics, encapsulation, microbial experimentation, one health, ecology, DNA data storage, and signature discovery.

This position will be filled at the Scientist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Scientist 2

You will serve as a co-investigator and execute research projects to apply the capabilities within B-GEN. As such, you will perform, conduct, and/or coordinate research projects to meet program/sponsor requirements and customer expectations. The candidate will have demonstrated technical knowledge in genomics, bioinformatics, and/or computational biology (including machine learning, statistics, data visualization), and work with other team members to achieve milestones for several projects on developing standardized (and new) tools for microbiome data analytics, integrating various biological data and ML methods to predict sequence to function from genetic/genomic data and raw sequencing data, advancing experimental and computational methods for pan-pathogen and pathogen-agnostic detection platforms, developing data visualization methods for the above complex data/results. The candidate would further be encouraged to pursue as PI, or as part of a collaborative effort, additional funding for projects that expand upon the current projects or broaden our area or research in an effort to further advance our team's experise, goals and that support LANL mission.

Scientist 3

In addition to what was outlined at the Scientist 2 level, at this level, you will serve as principal investigator or co-PI and will build a research program to extend/enhance the various capabilities within B-GEN. As such, you will help direct, coordinate, and/or execute research projects to meet program/sponsor requirements and customer expectations. The candidate will have demonstrated technical knowledge in genomics, bioinformatics, and/or computational biology (including machine learning, statistics, data visualization). The candidate will be responsible for progress and reporting deliverables to sponsors for several projects that can span: developing standardized (and new) tools for microbiome data analytics, integrating various biological data and ML methods to predict sequence to function from genetic/genomic data and raw sequencing data, advancing experimental and computational methods for pan-pathogen and pathogen-agnostic detection platforms, developing data visualization methods for the above complex data/results. The candidate would further seek funding as PI and in collaboration with the team, for additional projects that further advance our team's expertise, goals and tie in with ongoing LANL mission science.
