What You Will Do

Join our world class team of Earth scientists! The Earth and Environmental Sciences Division (EES) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a dynamic and innovative Deputy Division Leader. This role involves sharing responsibility of scientific leadership, strategic planning, management, and operations logistics of the EES Division. This Division is a dedicated, diverse, multi-disciplinary team of more than 200 researchers and staff working on a portfolio with an annual budget exceeding $100 million. EES is a trusted Laboratory resource providing world-class scientific solutions and analyses in national-security earth science, sustainable energy, earth-system dynamics, and climate change impacts.

The Deputy Division Leader will provide executive-level leadership for the three Groups that engage in both discovery science and mission-focused applications to support decisions of national importance. These Groups focus on research related to Climate, Ecology & Environment; Energy & Natural Resource Security; and National Security Earth Science. The work in EES includes experimental laboratory studies with state-of-the-art analytical equipment, global field deployments of monitoring equipment, data analysis of both big and sparse data sets, and high-performance simulation on world-class computers.

Working alongside the Division Leader, the successful Deputy Division Leader candidate will be committed to scientific excellence and a diverse workforce, have direct responsibility for significant elements of the technical leadership of the Division, and represent the Division and Directorate in institutional-level science and program planning. The selected individual will help to lead the management team, enabling program execution and technical excellence, while meeting goals in operations, business stewardship, and human resource management. Duties will also involve interaction with DOE sponsors such as NNSA, Office of Science, Applied Energy offices, Nuclear Energy, and other agencies, both directly and through LANL program offices.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership: Record of leadership in technical organizations, including line and/or program leadership; supervision, mentoring, and development of assigned employees; creation and retention of a diverse and inclusive workforce; conflict resolution; operational oversight and compliance; and application of sound business practices and judgment.

Strategy: Experience in strategic planning and implementation to identify challenges and opportunities, foster science, strengthen an organization, build technical capability, and improve technical infrastructure and facilities.

Program Development and Sponsor Relations: Experience in program development; acquiring funding for teams; integrating Division science with LANL missions (e.g., through Laboratory agenda), and representing programs internally and externally to sponsors, stakeholders, and/or review boards.

Science: A record of successful scientific research and/or programmatic accomplishments in areas relevant to the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division or national security activities aligned with the Division. Such a record would include publications, citations, presentations, grants or programmatic support, and/or leadership of large technical projects.

Collaboration and Communication: Experience in developing collaborations, teamwork, building consensus, and effective communication with staff, sponsors, and stakeholders.

Career Development and Diversity Equity Inclusion & Accessibility: Experience helping workforce development and creating an inclusive, accessibility culture where staff feel a sense of belonging within the team, group, and division.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires US Citizenship.

Desired Job Requirements:

Experience with AI/ML Systems: Experience with artificial intelligence/machine learning tools (either knowledge, use, development) to advance scientific understanding and/or results.

Experience with safety basis research: Experience working with and/or managing safety and security research that requires safety and/or security oversite (some examples include field, laboratory, classified research area).

Sponsor engagement: Established relationships with either program offices and/or sponsors tied to climate, clean energy, and national security research (examples include DOE - Office of Science, DOE-Fossil Energy, Carbon Management, and NNSA - Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (NA-20) with relevant sponsors within these program offices).

Security Clearance: Ability to obtain a SCI clearance.

  • PhD in Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field.

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related field and 12 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience with an emphasis in scientific leadership and management of a research organization with complex operations. A PhD is preferred.

If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Where You Will Work

The mission of the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is to solve complex problems of importance in environment + climate, energy, and national security. We are a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative division that tackles a broad range of challenges, including:

  • Applying artificial intelligence and machine learning data analytics

  • Fieldwork tied to climate, atmospheric radiation, seismic & infrasound sensing, UAS deployments

  • Characterizing and modeling subsurface fluid flow and geochemistry

  • Designing geological storage of carbon dioxide and hydrogen

  • Modeling, detecting, and predicting underground explosion signatures

  • Measuring trace isotopes and other geochemical constituents in fluid and solid samples

  • Providing advanced seismic imaging

  • Revealing climate change drivers and ecosystem impacts

  • Assessing basin-scale hydrologic systems at the energy-water nexus

  • Predicting wildland and urban fires

  • Understanding nuclear and rare materials

  • Improving geothermal and oil/gas energy production

  • Evaluating materials using nonlinear acoustic techniques

  • Measuring and modeling the dynamic mechanical properties of earth materials

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q or Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position : Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program : Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
