The Global Compliance & Ethics team plays a critical role in protecting American Express, our brand and colleagues through practical, solution-focused guidance on regulatory and ethics-related matters.

Within the International Compliance organisation, the Global Merchant and Network Services (GMNS) International Compliance team performs second-line oversight of the merchant acquiring and network businesses in International, ensuring a robust and sustainable compliance risk management framework. The team is responsible for providing Compliance advisory to the GMS Business on the management of strategic multi-country business initiatives and compliance risks as well as performing execution of core components of the American Express Compliance Program.

Reporting to the Director GMS Compliance, the Compliance Manager supports the development and ongoing maintenance of a comprehensive and sustainable compliance program for the GMS business in the European region. The role will also provide regulatory compliance support and guidance for the GMS business in its growth plans and development of new initiatives.

How will you make an impact in this role?

  • Support development and ongoing maintenance of the Compliance program of the GMS business in the European region

  • Provide expert credible challenge from compliance to the GMS business to comply with all applicable laws and regulations

  • Build proactive relationships with MCOs ensuring local market requirements are considered and work with them closely when new regulations are implemented

  • Provide practical guidance to Control Management and other GMS Teams on the implementation of new regulations impacting the GMS business in the European region and remediation activities as required,

  • Ensure that the first line policy framework is consistent with Regulatory expectations through review and challenge in the development process.

  • Complete ongoing activities related to compliance risk management in GMS, assessment and monitoring of compliance risk including execution of Compliance Risk Assessments

  • Ensure appropriate coordination with the global compliance program for GMS, enterprise-wide policies and programs, and market regulatory requirements

  • Advise the business on resolution of compliance-related incidents and gaps, particularly for those that fall under the Issues Management program

  • Support regulatory examinations, internal audit reviews, Compliance monitoring and testing, and related efforts

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience of working in a regulatory Compliance environment

  • Understanding of global financial regulations with a focus on those in Europe

  • Working knowledge of the Payments Industry

  • Proven ability to understand legal and regulatory concepts and convert them into relevant, practical business requirements and compliance solutions

  • Self-motivated, energetic team player with proven ability to work effectively in a matrix organization and across international markets with all levels of management

  • Strong influencing, communication and relationship skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Project Management skills for creating a plan and overseeing the execution of that plan relating to compliance initiatives

  • University degree and or compliance / legal qualification
