Team Overview

The Insurance Solutions team is a specialist, product agnostic investment strategy and structuring team which focuses on insurance clients and serves the entire BlackRock platform. The team is comprised of Insurance, Investment and Analytics Specialists, with diverse backgrounds from across asset management, analytics, actuarial, insurance and consultancy.

A key component of the team’s purpose is the development of the modelling and analytical capabilities required to serve our clients. We combine this with our insurance and investment capabilities to engage client businesses and portfolio managers across the whole firm to build new and innovative market leading investment solutions and position existing BlackRock products and solutions with insurance clients.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex advisory engagements across BlackRock’s global insurance client base, to help drive commercial outcomes for BlackRock by deepening relationships with clients, help position BlackRock’s existing capabilities and identify areas for new capability development

  • Own, oversee, and drive the ongoing development and deployment of all asset allocation and portfolio construction frameworks for the Insurance Solutions team globally. Own the governance process for all of the team’s asset allocation work to provide technical challenge, oversight and guidance for the global team

  • Partner with the colleagues to drive the ongoing development of the team’s optimisation models and tools, as well as associated IP (such as asset class assumptions), to facilitate the deployment of all asset allocation frameworks to deliver high-quality work at scale for the broadest possible range of client engagements

  • Act as a subject matter expert on insurance asset-liability management, capital modelling, insurance software and broader insurance balance sheet topics

  • Maintain strong relationships with internal partners in the Financial & Strategic Investors Group, BlackRock Investment Institute, Aladdin Financial Engineering and relevant investment teams to drive enhancements in analytical capabilities of relevance to insurers

  • Provide analytics and marketing materials to support the asset management sales process with insurers

Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience:

  • c.15+ years of experience gained within an insurance company, asset manager, investment bank, consultancy or similar institution

  • Comprehensive understanding of insurers’ Asset Liability Management, Strategic Asset Allocation and capital modelling frameworks, including the interactions with insurers’ pricing, reserving, accounting and reporting processes, is essential

  • A deep familiarity with the global regulatory and accounting regimes under which insurers operate, including their implications for ALM and asset allocation, with a specific focus on US, EMEA and Bermuda

  • Proven ability to lead teams to deliver on technically complex projects under tight timescales, including the ability to interact with insurance C-suite members and to tailor project deliverables to commercial, business and technical considerations

  • Comprehensive understanding of modern financial mathematics (e.g. bond mathematics, option pricing, hedging, stochastic processes, Monte Carlo simulation in real world and risk neutral environments, interest-rate modelling) and portfolio construction analytics (e.g. mean-variance optimization with constraints) are essential

  • Familiarity with the Moody’s Economic Scenario Generator, or other market-leading Economic Scenario Generator software, is desirable

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, intellectual curiosity, and experience understanding and solving complex issues

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • High level of integrity enabling the candidate to become a trusted partner to clients and peers

  • Undergraduate and / or advanced degrees in mathematics, engineering, computer science, and / or actuarial science would be preferred

  • Professional designations such as CFA, FRM, FIA, FSA etc. would be viewed favorably, but are not essential

For New York City only: The salary range for this position is $205,000 - $260,000. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, and benefits including heath care, leave benefits, and retirement benefits. BlackRock operates a pay-for-performance compensation philosophy and your total compensation may vary based on role, location, and firm, department and individual performance.
