Qualifications
The Lab Technician must have at least one year of experience in a lab or technical environment, a high school diploma or equivalent, strong technical skills and a willingness to learn new equipment and software, excellent problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills, communication and interpersonal skills for client interaction and teamwork, the ability to work independently and autonomously in a fast-paced environment, and the physical ability to lift heavy objects and perform hands-on tasks.
Job Summary
The Lab Technician is a dynamic and multi-disciplinary role that requires a balance of technical expertise, client interaction, community engagement, and various other responsibilities. You will work closely with clients and faculty, operate and maintain various lab equipment and software, develop educational courses, and promote the department and facility. The role requires a proactive approach, critical thinking, and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of the department. The lab is a key component of the Business and Innovation Hub, a department within Bridgerland Technical College. The Hub is dedicated to fostering the growth and development of emerging and expanding businesses.
Essential Duties: This position requires extensive hands-on interaction with faculty, staff, and students. As a result, this position requires physical presence to complete the essential duties found below.
Work with Clients:
- Facilitate one-on-one sessions as well as group teaching for businesses and members on specific issues in their business.
- Discuss applications, abilities, and a plan for success in each machine the facility owns.
- Assist clients with general business inquiries.
- Maintain positive and professional interactions with all potential and current clients.
- Cultivate relationships to build a stronger community of entrepreneurs.
Promote the Facility:
- Help with marketing efforts such as social media, Google/Bing, general SEO for all platforms, various funnels, classic techniques (flyers, radio, etc.).
- Attend relevant events to spread the word about the facility.
Course Development:
- Develop original courses.
- Update current courses as needed.
Work with Equipment and Software:
- While the Lab Technician is not expected to have immediate expertise with all equipment and software, any prior knowledge will be considered an asset.
- Must possess a strong willingness to learn about the following equipment and software:
- Equipment: sewing machines, sublimation printer, eco solvent printer, vinyl cutter, laser engraver, FDM 3D printers, SLA 3D printers, oscilloscope, function generator, DC power supply, microscope, soldering iron/heat gun, CNC router table, camera, light box, curtain assembly, various microphones, camera monitor, podcast studio, other AV equipment, fridges, flash freezer, turbo freezer, mixers, stove tops, ovens, sinks, washer and dryer, proofing oven, freeze dryer, etc.
- Software: slicing software (PreForm, BambuStudio, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Cura, CrealitySlicer, IdeaMaker); MeshMixer; Blender; Fusion 360 (design, render, animation, simulation, manufacture, drawing); Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere, Firefly, Acrobat); Glowforge; Graphtec; Epson Layout Manager; Vcarve Pro; Chief Architect (floor planning, 3D designs, walk throughs); Visual Studio Code; RevoScan; etc.
Progress Community Involvement:
- Work with the community to broaden everyone's general knowledge.
- Encourage enthusiasts and entrepreneurs alike to elevate their skills.
- Give tours of the facility.
- Help where possible.
Clean Up/Improve the facility:
- Upd ate wall hangings, paint, flooring, general design, etc.
- Ensure easy functionality.
- Improve dated systems.
- Create new systems and push new ideas.
- Emphasize good team morale.
- Focus on safety for clients.
- Enforce cleanliness standards.
- Promote safety in a clean work environment.
Work Environment:
- Work in a lab setting with various types of equipment.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting are required.
- May involve working with hazardous materials or in noisy environments occasionally.
