POSITION PURPOSE

The Vice President for Spiritual Care provides leadership and oversight of strategy, policy, design, quality improvement, and governance of Spiritual Care services across the continuum of Trinity Health. This includes providing direction, supervision, and integration in all areas of Spiritual Care including Spiritual Care Education (e.g., Clinical Pastoral Education/CPE), across the continuum of Trinity Health. As a member of the System-level Mission Executive Council (MEC), the VP collaborates in the development of system-wide policies, operational plans, and priority objectives, with an emphasis on key emergent system-wide Spiritual Care Initiatives, such as talent and workforce development of all spiritual care employees, students, and volunteers. The VP also serves as a consultant on care coordination of Spiritual Care throughout Trinity Health.

The VP reports directly to the Executive VP, Mission Integration/Chief Mission Officer (CMIO).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in leadership behaviors, practices, and decisions. Leads, designs, defines priorities, evaluates, and improves spiritual care strategies, policies, and programming across the care continuum within Trinity Health. Leads, designs, sets standards for, and evaluates competencies of the Spiritual Care workforce in collaboration with the Directors of Spiritual Care (DSC) and CPE. Ensures that Spiritual Care standards and policies are executed across the System. Supports and oversees the work of Directors of Spiritual Care and Director of Clinical Pastoral Education, who each report directly to the VP for Spiritual Care Ensures, in collaboration with the DSCs, that the Spiritual Care structures across TH are effective vehicles for the provision of a System-wide program of Spiritual Care for patients, residents, participants, colleagues, and providers. Collaborates with the MSPs (Mission Strategy Partners) in providing seamless Mission Integration services across the System Administrative Support Service (SASS) areas. Ensures that relationships and communication among the DSCs and Director of CPE with their respective Managers of Spiritual Care (MSCs), Mission Strategy Partners (MSPs), and Local Mission Leaders are strong and effective. Approves, in collaboration with the Director of CPE, the design, policy development, formation, and programming for Spiritual Care students across the continuum, such as CPE students (e.g., Chaplain Interns, Chaplain Residents, Certified Educator Candidates). Approves, in collaboration with the DSCs, the design, policy development, formation, and programming for Spiritual Care volunteers across the continuum, such as Eucharistic Ministers. Consults on the Spiritual Care aspects of the Catholic Identity Assessment program to advance System-wide Mission strategic efforts. Oversees strategic planning activities in Spiritual Care and Spiritual Care Education to ensure that goals progress according to plan. Provides guidance, direction, and support to Spiritual Care teams, intervening when necessary to review the current state, and to direct adjustments as needed to the planning and execution of strategy. Ensures timely communication of progress to the Mission Executive Council, Mission Integration Forum, and Spiritual Care and CPE leadership and practice groups. Provides programmatic consultative services for Spiritual Care and CPE ministries at specific sites as required. Participates on internal and external committees and task forces, as required/requested. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, the Trinity Health Integrity and Compliance Program and Code of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Board Certified Chaplain via an ACPE-related certifying agency required, with requisite MDiv or equivalent degree required. Doctoral level degree in theology, ethics, spirituality, or related area preferred. ACPE Certified Educator preferred. Teaching (e.g., ACPE Certified Educator) experience preferred.

Must demonstrate a working understanding of the Catholic Church and its traditions as well as an appreciation of its structures and laws.

Must have seven to ten (7-10) years of demonstrated leadership in health care (Catholic health care strongly preferred) including proven experience in understanding and leading the Catholic identity of an organization.

Must demonstrate leadership skills and experience in strategic thinking, health care operations, program/project management, budgetary responsibilities, and analytical skills.

Must be able to operate effectively in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

Must have proven oral and written communication skills with evidence of excellent interpersonal skill as well as the ability to present effectively before groups.

Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals and values of Trinity Health.

Must be able to adapt to frequently changing work priorities.

Must be able to travel as needed to the various Trinity Health sites.
