SUMMARY:

Breast Imaging Nurse Specialist

Under general supervision and by protocols developed by the Department of Radiology, the Breast Imaging Nurse Specialist will interface with the breast health team and assist with the coordination of all aspects of screening mammography, diagnostic imaging, clinical evaluation, support services and education for the patient and their families' receiving services at the breast imaging center. This position provides clinical functions as required in support of breast imaging center services and participates in maintaining a safe, cost-effective patient care environment.

JOB DUTIES

Provide education about breast imaging, diagnostic testing, biopsy procedures and pathology Educate, recruit, track and follow-up with women who receive abnormal breast cancer-screening results to assure easy access from diagnostic evaluation to biopsy if needed. Evaluates and revises care plans to appropriately reflect current changing status of patients. Reassure patients who are called back for additional imaging studies. Ensure contact of referring clinician when patients are found to need further diagnostic evaluation, MRI and/or breast biopsy/MRI follow up. Monitor patient scheduling and preparation for image guided breast biopsy including MRI, ultrasound and stereotactic core biopsy. Ensure the patient’s understanding of breast biopsy procedure. Assess patient and family for any barriers, which might prevent successful completion of breast evaluation and breast biopsy. Assist patient and family in overcoming barriers by providing information and referral to appropriate internal and external resources. Assist with imaging breast interventional procedures and renders nursing care as needed. Participates in aftercare and follow-up of patients who have had needle biopsies, provides follow up with each patient. Schedule surgical appointments as deemed necessary by radiologist. Awareness of Certified Board Breast Navigator in Oncology Services. Notify patients of benign and high-risk biopsy results once the breast imager has reviewed for radiological/pathologic concordance. Educate patient on benign pathology and recommended follow up. Serves as patient advocate in encouraging effective responses to patient’s condition from health care team members. Participates in tracking of breast biopsy outcomes and medical audits. Participates in research programs and studies. Participates in conferences and committees as directed (i.e.; rad path conference, tumor board, Breast Advisory Committee (BAC), etc.) Accepts all incoming queries related to risk assessment genetic screening and refers to all appropriate resources for more in-depth assessment based on established criteria. Promote culture of safety by coordinating technologist/radiologist in-services on basic blood pressure, as needed. Manages and coordinates patient anticoagulant and/or antiplatelet regimen based on direction from the Department of Radiology guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred; Associates degree in Nursing required. BSN degree preferred or must agree in writing to obtain a BSN within five years. Current RN licensure in the State of Michigan required. BLS required. Previous medical surgical experience preferred. Must be computer proficient and have excellent customer service skills.
