Job Summary and Qualifications

The ED Critical Care Technician is a certified and/or licensed EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) or EMT-P (Paramedic) and is part of the Emergency Department patient care team who collaboratively works in a complementary and assistive role with nursing. The ED Critical Care Technician performs a variety of RN delegated tasks under the supervision of the registered nurse. He/she assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with training, competence and skill. He/she is knowledgeable of and follows all Hospital policies and procedures. Consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, adequately stocked and safe patient environment.

Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics:

  1. Education
  • High School Graduate or equivalent

  • Graduate of EMT program or military medic training program

  1. Experience:
  • One year experience as an Emergency Department Technician preferred

  • One year experience as a Paramedic preferred

  1. Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable).

Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required:

  1. Current certification as an EMT-B, EMT-I, EMT-P or Military Medic

  2. BLS, ACLS, PALS (within 6 months of hire), CPI (within 90 days of hire)

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Consistently assists with maintaining a safe patient environment to include following all patient safety initiatives, hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate following transmission base precaution procedures.

  2. Demonstrates proficiency in setting up procedures as delegated.

  3. Actively participates in Unit-based/hospital-based committees and process improvement, i.e. Safety Champion, assists Director with bi-annual completion of Environmental Tour requirement, and actively participates in disaster response team. Functions as Super Trainer for Point of Care Testing for ED techs and as a preceptor for new techs.

  4. Participates as a qualified observer for initial and ongoing ED tech competencies.

  5. As delegated by the RN, operates patient monitoring equipment and records in patient medical record, prints rhythm strips, performs 12 lead EKGs, biomarkers and glucometer readings.

  6. Communicates timely and accurate information for delegated patient care activities performed, to include observed patient response to performed activities, to the assigned RN in a written or verbal format following hand-off communication guidelines.

  7. Performs phlebotomy, collects laboratory specimens as ordered and inserts saline lock.

  8. Assist in patient care, obtains and documents vital signs, provides patient hygiene, maintains clear and respectful communications with patients, families and the healthcare team. Documents all interventions.

  9. Transports patients within the facility utilizing appropriate transport and monitoring equipment.

Must learn and comply with System and facility safety policies and rules; must use appropriate safety equipment and procedures at all times; must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors; must be familiar with all safety features of equipment, tools or materials encompassed by job duties; and must check with supervisors (prior to job performance) if there is a question as to the safe procedure to be used for any job function.

  3. Adheres to the MHS Code of Conduct and demonstrates ethical behavior as expected by our patients, colleagues and the community. Understands the personal obligation to report any activity that appears to violate applicable laws, rules regulations or the Code of Conduct itself.

  4. Completes other duties as assigned.
