Job Description

At Olsson, we help our clients proactively comply with complicated regulatory processes and provide our clients with the latest and best methods of documentation, remediation, and restoration. The Associate Scientist relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals while working within a limited scope under general supervision. This position assists with generating ideas and developing purposeful, high-quality solutions that help balance the needs of our clients and the benefits to the environment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides data collection and research for specific phases of scientific projects using fundamental knowledge, standard techniques, and established methods for small to mid-sized projects.

  • Performs basic review and analysis of environmental studies and receives instructions for necessary tasks.

  • Develops and applies knowledge and experience working within design, modeling, and/or geographic information systems.

  • May work in the office, lab, or field, conducting standard scientific samples, field observations, and data collection assignments.

  • Completes routine field investigations, data collection, and documentation independently.

  • Coordinates with experienced scientists on non-routine techniques and procedures.

  • Gathers research, provides opinions and recommendations, and creates drafts of technical reports from findings using prescribed methods.

  • Mentors student interns by providing opportunities for developing basic technical skills and knowledge.

  • Gains experience with creating and maintaining project and client information within the firm’s project management system.

  • May supervise student staff.

  • May travel and work in all types of terrain and weather conditions at project sites in various stages of construction.

  • Strong Communication Skills

  • Ability to contribute and work well on a team

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline or other applicable field

  • A minimum of one year of scientific experience

  • Adept in verbal and written communication

  • Has solid interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

  • Has the ability to diligently research applicable requirements and regulations

  • Has advanced understanding of science and analytical abilities

  • Has working knowledge (or the ability to become proficient) in applicable technologies

  • Has a valid driver’s license and a good driving history

  • Has a willingness to work a flexible schedule and travel as required
