MIT Lincoln Laboratory Deputy Chief Technology Officer in Lexington, Massachusetts

Job Description

The Deputy Chief Technology Officer (Deputy CTO) works closely with the CTO in the development and coordination of the Laboratory’s overall strategy for technology development. The Deputy CTO helps coordinate and manage the Laboratory’s internal R&D investments, and develops and implements initiatives to promote innovative R&D across the Laboratory’s diverse mission areas. The Deputy CTO specific responsibilities include:

Duties/Responsibilities

• Work with Laboratory and Technology Office leadership in the development of long-range, Laboratory-wide technology road maps and investment strategies that are coupled to the evolving needs of U.S. national security and the Laboratory's strategic sponsors. • Support and assist in the strategic leadership of the Laboratory’s annual Department of Defense – funded internal research and development investments and project portfolio. • Spearhead specific technology projects, studies and evaluations as determined by the Laboratory’s strategic directions and Technology Office priorities. • Lead and support alignment of plans, policies, processes and resources for achieving the Laboratory's strategic technology vision. May be responsible for management/oversight of staff, research investments, portfolios, and initiatives. • Will represent the Laboratory in interactions with external sponsors, research partners and collaborators through conferences, showcases, technical briefings, demonstrations, etc.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Masters or PhD in relevant science and/or engineering (STEM) disciplines with a distinguished record of technical or scientific achievements throughout their career. A minimum of 12 years working in a technology field is required, with least 8 years in progressively responsible leadership roles which included oversight of several complex and diverse programs and portfolios. • Experience in assessing technology trends, developing technology strategy and driving innovation in a diverse R&D organization • Demonstrated program development and execution experience, including working with sponsors to align technical concepts with mission needs, and leading technical teams to transform advanced technical concepts into prototypes. Experience in technology transition to the US Department of Defense through various means (program of record, commercial licensing, open source, etc.) is desired. • Research experience, including collaborations with university partners, and project leadership experience in an R&D environment required. Line management experience preferred. • Knowledge in several of the following technology areas: advanced materials and processes, microelectronic devices, computing hardware and software, optical systems, RF systems, cyber systems, artificial intelligence, decision systems, autonomous systems, and biotechnology; a willingness to acquire a deeper understanding of all of these areas. Experience working cross-disciplinary programs across several of these technology areas is desired as is the ability to apply this knowledge strategically to identify cross-domain opportunities and challenges. • Team-oriented individual with excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills; strong organizational, collaboration and project leadership skills • Selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI level DoD security clearance with compartmented program eligibility. Current TS/SCI Security Clearance preferred.
