Job Summary: The Medical Assistant Apprentice will support the delivery of patient care in a physician office setting, learning under the direct supervision of experienced healthcare professionals at Central Maine Healthcare. This apprenticeship offers an opportunity to develop critical skills in providing both direct and indirect patient care, adhering to CMH’s Clinical Policies and Procedures, and operating within the American Association of Medical Assistants guidelines. The role emphasizes outstanding customer service, teamwork with staff, physicians, and other departments, and a commitment to CMH’s values.
The Medical Assistant Apprentice will provide care that demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and accountability, while practicing under the supervision of certified professionals. Apprentices will learn to prioritize patient care based on physical and psychosocial needs, assisting with patient flow through the system. This program includes structured mentorship, hands-on learning experiences, and opportunities for professional growth within a supportive healthcare environment.
About the Program:
CMH offers a 4-month, state approved Medical Assistant training program in partnership with the Maine Department of Labor at no costs to the student.
This is a regular, full-time, hourly position with an expectation of 40 hours per week of classroom, lab and on-the-job training.
Classes will be two days (8 hours) per week with a concentration on lecture and lab. Class and lecture hours will be held at Central Maine Medical Center.
16 hours per week will be dedicated to clinical training hours at either your assigned practice or on a rotation to another practice.
16 hours per week will be dedicated to Patient Service Representative hours to be held at an assigned practice or on a rotation to another practice as needed.
Students will meet the necessary requirements to obtain their Provider Basic Life Support certification prior to starting as an MA.
Once the Medical Assistant classroom and lab training program is complete, and you have passed your Certified Medical Assistant exam you will transition into a full-time medical assistant position with a new rate of pay within the MA pay range. You will continue in your apprenticeship until you have met all the competencies of a Medical Assistant and or 1,000 hours of work per the Maine Apprenticeship guidelines.
Textbooks and workbooks are provided at no charge. At the end of the program, students will sit for the CMA certification examination at no cost to them. The student has 90 days after accepting a full time MA position to sit for and pass the exam.
Successful graduates will be required to work as an MA at a Central Maine Healthcare Facility for at least one year in a full-time role, or they will be required to pay back the cost of the course at a prorated amount.
The content of the training program fulfills the requirements required by law as specified in the State Board of Nursing Prescribed Curriculum. Topics include:
Anatomy & Physiology
Applied Mathematics
Infection Control
Concepts of Effective Communication
Administrative Functions
Basic Practice Finances
Ethical Considerations
Protective Practices
Who is eligible for this program?
Minimum age 18
High School Diploma or GED required
Demonstrate ability to read and write English
a. Completed 9th grade English
b. Score at least 239 on CASAS
- Completed State Bureau of Investigation Background Check
A person cannot be a Medical Assistant in Maine if they have been convicted of: Theft or abuse in a health care setting, Sexual abuse, or A crime for which one could have received a 3-year sentence.
Immunizations required by Central Maine Healthcare: MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Annual Influenza. Proof of negative TB test.
Physical Exam within the past year from a medical provider stating the candidate is physically capable of doing Medical Assistant work.
