About the position
The IDFG-Lewiston Wild Salmon & Steelhead team is seeking four (4) temporary Fisheries Biological Aides (non-benefited) to conduct fish (snorkeling) and habitat surveys to determine the abundance and distribution of salmonids in the Clearwater and Salmon River Basins.
General Information:
The employee will be a member of a crew to conduct fish and habitat surveys in streams by snorkeling.
The work schedule will vary, but will generally consist of 10-hour workdays, with 8 days on duty followed by 6 days off duty depending on project needs, stream conditions, weather, and other factors. Applicants must be flexible on their schedule. All food, equipment, and camping gear (except for sleeping bag) are supplied by IDFG during work shifts. The crew is required to camp out in remote backcountry areas with limited or no phone/internet service during their shifts. Housing is not provided during days off.
Incumbents must be able to snorkel in cold water for up to 8 hours per day, work in adverse weather conditions, and be able to hike 5-12 miles per day over rough and rugged terrain while carrying a backpack weighing 50-60 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.
Responsibilities:
Fish and habitat data collection, data entry, proofing data, field equipment and trip preparation, camp duties.
Qualifications:
It is preferred that applicants be enrolled in a bachelors degree program in fisheries or other biological sciences and/or have previous fisheries work experience. Individuals with salmonid identification experience are preferred. Proficient in Microsoft applications and experience with using topographical maps/software and GPS is a plus. Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid drivers license.
