In 2021, the New York State Public Health Corps (NYSPHC)Fellowship Programwas formed to supportNew York Statepublic health preparednessand responserelated tothe COVID-19 pandemicand other public health emergencies. In August 2024, the next cohort of NYSPHC Fellows will be mobilized across New York Stateto 1) providecritical support and services totheNew York State Department of Health,local health departments (LHD), and community-based sitesin response to both current and future public health emergencies, (2) build effective communication and messaging throughout the Statetosupport key strategies addressing public health efforts, and (3) facilitate connections among the community level public health stakeholders required to strengthen and sustain public health learning and action partnerships.Public Consulting Group LLC (PCG), as the project manager,and its affiliate,Staffing Solutions OrganizationLLC(SSO),have partnered with NYSPHCfor SSOto recruit and hireFellows for the 2024-2026 Public Health Corps Cohort.

Responsibilities

As a Public Health Fellow I, youwillberesponsible forworking with thedesignatedhost organizationto provide specialized professional services related toidentifiedpublic health priorities.The Public HealthFellowI will have an onsite presence based on the needs of thehost organization. The host organizationmayrequireup to 100 percent onsite workand/or local travel.

Responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  • Comply withNYSPHC requirements, includingsuccessfully completingCornellUniversity’sPublic Health EssentialsCertificateCourseand University of Miami’sBuildingExpertise in Administration and ManagementCertificate course.

  • Comply withPCGprojectand SSO employment and program requirements.

  • Focusefforts in at least one of the following areas:communications;emergency preparedness and response;epidemiology;laboratory;policy development;program and organizational management; and stakeholderengagement.

Responsibilities and tasks may include:

  • Supportwith publichealthinvestigationsand surveillance activitiesto gather information onCOVID-19,emergingor futurepublic health threats,and/orchronic or communicable diseases.

  • Providepublic health education, training,and outreach programs.

  • Collect, review, andenter data required by the host organization.

  • Prepare written summaries,reports,and action plans.

  • Createanddisseminatecommunicationsfor publichealthoutreach.

  • Assistthe public in obtainingappropriate services.

  • Communicate regularly with theNYSPHC RegionalFellowship Placement Coordinator. 

  • Other duties, as assigned.  

Fellowship Position specific Description

TheCornell Cooperative Extension Essex Public Health Fellow I will work in Program and Organizational Management , focusing onnutrition and food security. Thefellow will:

  • Utilize program resources and materials to develop and distribute educational materials that link public health outcomes with local, healthy food.

  • Teach existing educational programs as defined.

  • Work to foster acceptance of community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.

  • Under the direction and oversight of the Program Team Leaders, apply subject matter knowledge to create and deliver lesson plans.Delivery methods include, but are not limited to, one-on-one teaching, group classes, and workshops.

  • Assistcommunity members in enrolling in public programs that enable them to access andpurchaselocal food.

  • Assistin providing educational programs via mass media.

  • Adapt in-person programming to virtual settings.

  • Assistin enrolling eligible residents in SNAP.

  • Advisefood pantries who want to incorporate local food for recipients.

  • Contribute to data resources about food access and local food providers (see https://ahihealth.org/healthyadk/ )

  • Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire Association and Program staff to achieve Association program delivery goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one of the following:

  • One year of experience within a health, public health, education, human services, community-based organization, or institutional setting

  • One year of experience in administrative, personnel, fiscal, or other related operational activity

  • Associate’sdegree

  • Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Proficiencywith computers, including word processing, email, data entry, using spreadsheets and databases, and creating presentations.

  • Critical thinking and sound judgment. 

  • A flexible, adaptive, and composed attitude with the ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse individuals.

  • Phenomenal work ethic with a positive attitude.   

  • Employment is contingent on completion of a background check.  

  • Must be able to meet position requirements, including reporting for onsite work or local travel asrequired.

Compensation for roles at Staffing Solutions Organization LLC (SSO) varies depending on a wide array of factors including, but not limited to, the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. As required by applicable law, SSO provides a reasonable range of compensation for this role. In addition, SSO provides a range of benefits for this role.
