State of Massachusetts Bridge Inspection Team Leader (MassDOT Bridge Inspector III) in Lenox, Massachusetts
Position Summary Incumbent in this position schedule assigned structures in coordination with the District Inspection Engineer to suit availability, site condition and weather. Obtain necessary tools, equipment, and forms for the inspections. Arrange traffic control, flagman and other required assistance in coordination with the District Inspection Engineer and the District Operations Section. Duties and Responsibilities * Monitor the safety controls before and during the work, assuring that all personnel have and use the appropriate safety equipment and take immediate corrective action if unsafe conditions are found. * Obtain and review available plans, inspection records, rating reports, dive reports and maintenance records pertinent to bridge, tunnel and/or facility inspection. * Perform rapid overview walks around inspection area at start of the inspection to gain familiarity with current structure and disclose problem areas requiring closer attention. * Act as a Bridge Inspection Team Leader and perform structure inspection based on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Bridge Inspector Reference Manual for the Condition and Evaluation of Bridges and following procedures established in the department's Bridge Inspection Handbook and MassDOT Tunnel Inspection policies. * Report deficiencies following established procedure in the Bridge and Tunnel Inspection Handbook and in compliance with existing policies as directed. * Verify that all equipment is collected and returned to proper storage location upon completion of inspection. * Prepare inspection reports that fully and accurately describe the structure's condition using department approved templates, forms, and electronic data collections systems. * Perform other job-related duties as required. Unit E Sign-On Bonus This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period. Applicants must have (A) a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and (B) an Engineer-In-Training certification or Professional Engineer registration, and (C) at least two (2) years of bridge inspection experience, and (D) possess the minimum qualifications to be in charge of a bridge inspection team as specified in 23 CFR Part 650 Subpart C by having one of the following required combinations of training and experience: Possession of a Professional Engineer registration and successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course; or A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in bridge inspection assignments in a responsible capacity and successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course; or Certification as a Level III or IV Bridge Safety Inspector under the National Society of Professional Engineers’ program for National Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) and successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course; or A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and an Engineer-in-Training certification and two (2) years of bridge inspection experience and successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course; or An Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology and four (4) years of bridge inspection experience and successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course. Substitution: A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the next lower Bridge Inspector title in addition to successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course, may be substituted for the Bachelor’s Degree and Professional Engineer registration. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: * Must be able to successfully complete all federal and state training required to meet federal NBIS regulations and safety standards. * Based on assignment, a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s license is required. * Based on assignment, SCUBA certification from a recognized educational program may be required.
