The City of Lenexa-s Municipal Services Department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Public Works Intern to join our team! This internship is designed to provide valuable, hands-on experience in public works operations while working alongside dedicated professionals in a dynamic municipal environment.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Municipal Services Director, the Public Works Intern will support field inspections, data collection, and project implementation to maintain and enhance Lenexa-s pavement, stormwater, and traffic infrastructure. This position offers exposure to real-world challenges in civil engineering, environmental science, and construction science.
Hours and Location:
The Municipal Services Department operates out of the Municipal Services Service Center, typically from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with flexibility within a set schedule of approximately 40 hours per week.
Internship start and end dates are flexible, with an estimated duration from mid-May to mid-August.
Key Responsibilities:
General:
Collect and manage GPS and GIS data for infrastructure assets.
Provide support for inspectors and staff in resolving construction challenges.
Operate city vehicles for fieldwork as required.
Pavement Management:
Inspect and evaluate contractor activities on asphalt roadways, curbs, and sidewalks to ensure compliance with city standards.
Assist with street maintenance tasks such as pavement patching and minor concrete repairs.
Traffic Systems:
Conduct streetlight checks, traffic signal inspections, and update street sign inventories.
Stormwater Management:
Perform stormwater infrastructure inspections and contribute to minor repair projects.
Qualifications:
Required:
High school diploma or G.E.D.
Current enrollment in a higher education program pursuing a bachelor-s degree in engineering, environmental science, construction science, or a related field.
Valid driver-s license.
Preferred:
Coursework or experience in civil or environmental engineering, stormwater principles, or construction science.
Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Central Square EAM Asset Management software.
The rate of pay is $17.00 per hour.
Physical and Environmental Factors:
This role requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Must be able to navigate and inspect uneven terrain, construction sites, or potentially hazardous environments.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check.
