Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee – Mechanical Engineering in Lemont, Illinois

The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Appointee. The candidate will develop high performance material models and finite element models to solve solid mechanics-related Multiphysics problems on hybrid computing clusters utilizing both CPU and GPU.

The candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop material models and finite element models to solve solid mechanics-related Multiphysics problems using both physics-based simulations and data-driven approaches. The focus of this project will be on developing new models suitable for modeling coupled field phenomena in manufacturing processes including sintering, debinding, pyrolysis, infiltration, etc. The physical phenomena of interest include mechanical deformation and dissipation, heat transfer, electrostatics, electrodynamics, mass transport, and electromagnetics. The candidate will help draft and publish technical reports, conference papers, and journal publications describing the research and will be expected to attend and present at technical conferences.

Position Requirements

  • The prospective candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.

  • Experience with the finite element method.

  • Coding experience in C++ and Python.

  • Skilled in oral and written communications and presentations at all levels of the organization.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with software packages or libraries using the finite element method.

  • Experience working with the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE).

  • Experience with PyTorch or other machine learning libraries.

  • Experience with job scheduling systems such as slurm or pbs.
