Job Description:

Faculty Policy Development, Review, and Education (.70--of 75%)

  • Engage in collaborative efforts to develop policy that defines and supports the faculty role at KU and aligns with the university’s vision and goals.

  • Support academic and governance units in the development and implementation of policies that define and support the faculty role at KU with the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs.

  • Support the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs on policy related to governance, labor relations, and the Kansas Board of Regents.

  • Develop and coordinate internal processes for the review of unit-level policies that require Provost-level approval with the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs.

  • Ensure alignment between unit and university-level policies related to faculty.

  • Conduct research and assessment to inform university policies, procedures, and their effectiveness.

  • Represent the Office of Faculty Affairs on task forces and committees focused on policy initiatives.

  • Design and deliver educational sessions and materials that include policy-relevant information, best practices in the implementation of policy and policy development, and policy updates for faculty and administrative leaders.

Faculty Recognition (.20--of 75%)

  • Chair and coordinate the university-level faculty award committee processes administered by the Office of Faculty Affairs.

  • Coordinate recognition of the faculty recipients of university-level faculty awards administered by the Office of Faculty Affairs with university-level offices.

  • Partner with the Director of Faculty Recognition and Awards and other units across campus to identify and grow faculty recognition opportunities.

  • Develop initiatives to recognize faculty excellence in research, teaching, and service and encourage faculty recognition across campus.

  • Represent the Office of Faculty Affairs in campus initiatives and committees focused on faculty recognition.

Other duties as assigned (.10--of 75%)

Associate/Full Professor Faculty Duties (0.25 FTE)

Faculty duties will be discipline-specific. Traditional percentages of time including the following, but could be negotiated with the Department Chair or School/College Dean:

20% Research

20% Teaching

10% Service

  • Demonstrated experience with membership on committees responsible for developing and enacting policy (e.g., university or unit promotion and tenure, governance, undergraduate and graduate curriculum and policy).

  • Demonstrated experience with administration at department, School/College, or University level.

  • Demonstrated experience working with an awards committee and/or developing faculty recognition opportunities, at the unit, university or disciplinary level.

  • Demonstrated experience working with units across campus.

Position Overview:

The Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Policy and Recognition in the Office of Faculty Affairs will work on policy and recognition-related projects and initiatives that intersect with the roles and responsibilities of faculty at KU. This position will take a leadership role in developing policy, policy review processes, and educational programming on faculty policy. The person in this role will also develop and promote faculty recognition initiatives, as well as coordinate university-level faculty award committees. This position will work in collaboration with academic units and their leadership; governance; Policy Administration; KU Office of Research; HR; and other key leaders and stakeholders across campus.

The responsibilities of this role will be guided by the priorities of the Office of Faculty Affairs, with specific duties listed below. This will be an Academic Year (9-month) appointment with .75 FTE in the Office of Faculty Affairs and .25 FTE in home academic unit. The appointment will also come with an administrative supplement and 8 weeks of summer salary.
