Basic Function
The current vacancies are the Sheriff's Department. The eligibility list created by this vacancy may be used to hire other vacancies in the department or County.
To maintain security and ensure the safety of residents and staff at the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Facility; to observe and monitor resident behavior and supervise and facilitate their daily living activities; to maintain ongoing communication with those confined; to enforce all rules, regulations, and policies of the facility; and, to perform related duties as assigned.(This is the full performance level of this class series. It differs from Correctional Officer 1 in that the work involves the application of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through two years of experience.)
If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules (i.e., promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction).

The 2025 salary range for Correctional Officer 1 is $ 54,225.60 - $79,500.
The 2025 salary range for Correctional Officer 2 is $58,941 - $ 86,340.80 .

Oversee residents during job assignments, meals, recreation, extra duty, and visits to ensure the security and safety of residents, staff and visitors; observe, monitor, record and report any unusual resident activity or behavior.
Conduct security checks of buildings and grounds to ensure that residents are securely confined.
Conduct searches of residents including residents living quarters, and work areas for contraband or weapons.
Converse regularly with residents to ensure an atmosphere of open staff/resident communication; provide information to residents on rules, regulations and various programs available at the facility.
Enforce the prescribed disciplinary practice of the facility, report and react to rule violations, and apply appropriate measures.
Intervene in emergency situations such as fights, suicide attempts or fires by applying first aid, enforcing rules, restraining residents, responding to calls for assistance, or by notifying proper authorities such as police, medical facilities, case workers, or administration.
Administer lifesaving practices, when necessary, records and distributes medicine, and carries out treatments and orders of medical personnel.
Book, process, identify and release residents at the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center.
Admit and orientate new residents, issue clothing, secure resident property, inform residents of the rules and direct them to living areas and job assignments.
Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
Position requires the ability to work shift rotations to maintain minimum staffing requirements.
Mandated overtime to ensure adequate staffing coverage and maintenance of safety for residents at all times.
At the Ramsey County Correctional Facility assume the duties of specialty Correctional Officers related to laundry or kitchen, during scheduled or emergency absences.
Assume responsibility of the facility in the absence of supervisory personnel in order to maintain the efficient operation of the facility.
May staff the central control area to monitor and report resident behavior and control the flow of movement throughout the facility by operating the public address system and electronically controlled gates.

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.
Experience: Any combination of general work experience or post high school education that equals two years; and two additional years of experience as a Correctional Officer 1 (General Duty) or equivalent.

Exam/Screening Process Information
The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:
- Training and Experience Rating = 100%
The examination for Correctional Officer will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions – do not mark “see resume” or “see work history” as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Correctional Officer. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 30 days or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been certified and their status.
The names of all applicants who pass the examination with a score of 40 or higher (who score in the top 100 or with a score of 40% or higher) will be forwarded to the department for further consider.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
Criminal Background Checks: All employment offers are conditioned upon the applicant passing a criminal background check. Convictions are not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered on its individual merits and the type of work sought. However, making false statements or withholding information will cause you to be barred from employment, or removed from employment.
