ABOUT THE POSITION
The Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Family Counselor position. As a Family Counselor, you will interact in a supportive and empathetic fashion with grieving persons to provide grief support and provide/suggest access to community resources that might aide them during their bereavement. The ideal candidate will be a contact point for bereaved families during the course of the medicolegal death investigation process with the Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in social work, sociology, social science, psychology, counseling, marriage and family therapy or a field related to the work; AND two (2) years of full-time child welfare work or professional level casework experience. Master's Degree preferred.

Working Conditions: Work extended shifts or be called back on a 24-hour basis in crisis situations. Work evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts. Work in a locked detention facility. Provide in-home therapy in a variety of living situations.
Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver's License at time of appointment.
Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
General Counselor Tasks Performed in All Positions:
Develops case files and makes accurate case notes; provides case management in specified areas of assignment. Conducts a variety of analytical studies; develops and reviews reports of findings, alternatives and recommendations; prepares a variety of written materials. May provide lead direction to volunteers, part-time and temporary staff. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work; drives a personal or County motor vehicle to various in-home and community agency sites.
For the Department of Family Services:
Conducts detailed assessments of youth and family clients referred through the Juvenile Court system, either in a detention or protective custody facility or in an in-home setting. Interviews clients, families and other appropriate individuals; confers with other staff members regarding behavior evidences and develops treatment plans. Provides crisis intervention on a 24-hour basis and/or ongoing counseling for youth at the detention facility, the child shelter or on an in-home basis; extends such services to parents, guardians and other family members as required. Under the supervision of a licensed therapist, administers psychometric tests and other assessment devices; prepares recommendations regarding a variety of treatment options, including hospitalization, alternative living arrangements, short- and long-term therapy and rehabilitation, education and other alternatives. Makes and facilitates community-based referrals, coordinates treatment and follows-up as required; refers families for medical, social, economic and other services that may enhance the treatment process.
In the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner (CCOCME):
Serves as primary point of contact between family members/representative(s) and CCOCME staff to provide timely and accurate case status information. Coordinates prioritization and follow-up services with CCOCME management throughout case until completion. Collaborates with medical examiners, medicolegal death investigators, and forensic technicians in order to provide timely and accurate case status information to family members/representatives. Tracks feedback from family members and uses this information to recommend changes to internal processes in order to improve satisfaction with CCOCME’s services. Collaborates with staff to develop and deliver training materials that will enhance customer service skills of the CCOCME Customer Service Representatives. Collaborates with CCOCME staff to develop materials for family support and outreach, to include but not be limited to the CCOCME informational brochure and website. Collaborates with CCOME staff to develop peer support programs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
