Motor Carrier Officers are members of the Michigan State Police (MSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED).  They specialize in commercial vehicles and duties include traffic enforcement, crash investigation, driver and vehicle inspections, criminal interdiction, hazardous material transport, regulatory compliance, weigh station operation, infrastructure protection, as well as general emergency response. 

Motor Carrier Officer's patrol is self-directed and encourages proactive and independent decision making.  Individual work sites set schedules but most prioritize day shifts.  Officers generally work 1 weekend shift a month, or less, and receive 13 paid holidays off a year.

Motor Carrier Officer recruits complete training at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing, Michigan.  They receive hands-on, lecture, and scenario-based instruction in firearms, patrol techniques, first aid, criminal law, precision driving, water safety, defensive tactics, report writing, ethics, FMCSA regulations, cultural diversity and implicit bias.

During the training academy recruits receive approximately $3,900 a month.  Officers receive annual raises and reach a top base salary of over $71,000 after 6 years.  This does not include overtime or shift premiums.

Officers are eligible to transfer or promote to different posts after completion of the training program.
