Responsibilities

At PNNL, we are looking for a PhD Intern to work with our team to develop approaches based on graph theory and/or graph neural networks (GNN) to demonstrate the advantages of grid-enhancing technologies, such as dynamic line rating and topology optimization. This involves designing and implementing algorithms, with experience in high-performance computing environments being a plus, that leverage graph-structured data to optimize power grid performance, enhance reliability, and improve flexibility through advanced grid management techniques.

You will collaborate closely with a dynamic team of power system researchers, contributing to a cutting-edge research program that leverages emerging technologies to advance the future of energy systems. The ideal candidate will have expertise in machine learning and high-performance computing, along with a solid background in power system modeling and simulation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field.

• Experience with graph theory and graph neural networks.

• Experience working in a high-performance computing environment.

• Experience with power system modeling and simulation.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience. Instead, our compensation offers are determined by the specific requirements of the position, prevailing market trends, applicable collective bargaining agreements, pay equity for the position type, and individual qualifications and skills relevant to the performance of the position.
