McLaren Health Care Emergency Department Technician - McLaren Careers in Lansing, Michigan

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, responsible for providing support to nursing staff and assisting in the delivery of patient care following hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

1.

Provides routine patient care services such as call light response; ambulating, transferring, and positioning; personal hygiene assistance.

2.

Collects, records, and reports various patient data. Obtains vital signs, blood glucose levels, bedside pregnancy testing, and reports changes in patient data to registered nurse.

3.

Performs Foley catheterization for both male and female patients, uses bladder scanner for patients to estimate bladder contents.

Administers enemas as directed. Collects and transports specimen.

Documents.

4.

Performs specific orthopedic procedures such as placement and fitting of splints, immobilizers, supports, slings, wraps and crutches, and provides instruction.

Obtains, and documents correctly, paperwork in appropriate paperwork.

5.

Performs electrocardiogram, gives copy to Emergency physician and transmits for interpretation.

Places patient on cardiac monitor as needed.

6.

Performs general unit support activities such as postmortem care, cleaning of rooms and areas, running errands, making deliveries, and restocking.

7.

Performs decontamination procedures and other decontamination activities.

8.

Sets up of suture trays, instruments and other equipment.

9.

Participates in emergencies; CPR, spiking IVs, slaving monitors.

Setting up for pacing/defibrillation and assisting with intubation, suction and airway management.

10.

Exchanges and maintains portable O2 tanks in department.

11.

Transports patients to and from departments for testing and to inpatient units.

12.

When an RN is not available, answers ambulance radio/phone on priority 2 and 3 calls, documents

EMS

report, and discusses patient placement with registered nurse. Ascertains patients “Last Known Well Time” when appropriate. When answering EMS call identifies self by using first name and Job title.

13.

Is able to recognize LifeNet alerts from EMS, download incoming EKG, and present to ED physician at time of retrieval.

14.

Cleans wounds promptly upon patient placement within department pod. Proactive in gathering anticipated supplies needed to address patient wounds. Performs simple dressing changes after wound assessed by registered nurse.

15.

Cleans trays and equipment, returns to central processing and picks up sterile supplies.

16.

Assists in application and removal of backboards and cervical collars of trauma victims.

17.

Performs breathalyzers when ordered.

18.

Places Saline Lock in patient as ordered by Physician, PA or standing order when delegated by an RN following Nursing Policy 40.4.010.

19.

Discontinue IVs as directed by registered nurse.

20.

Demonstrates knowledge on setting up / priming continuous bladder irrigation and assists monitoring inflow and outflow with registered nurse. Empties and records outflow.

21.

Reports off to oncoming shift for patient continuity.

Checks on patients for needs.

22.

Locks down elevators during Code Red pages.

23.

Stocks patient rooms, line cart and suture carts in assigned rooms and assist in stocking other areas of department when assigned area is completed.

24.

Performs thorough cleaning of stretchers and patient rooms during downtime according to procedure.

25.

Responds to emergency calls to the parking lot and ambulance bay to bring patient in.

26.

Precepts new employees once competent in role.

27.

Rounds to rooms at shift change to ensure stocking accuracy, and department readiness.

28.

Performs other related responsibilities as necessary.

Required:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Specialized education requirements include:

o

acute care nursing assistant course preferred for acute care positions

or

o

long term care nursing assistant course

or

o

completion of an emergency medical technician program

or

o

completion of medical assistant program

or

o

completion of a clinical rotation while participating in an accredited nursing program

or

o

completion of medical training in a branch or the armed services

  • Recent patient care experience in acute care setting as nursing assistant, EMT, completion of a clinical rotation in an accredited nursing program, or completion of the US Armed Services medic program.

  • BLS certification as Healthcare Provider

or equivalent through the Military Training Network (MTN).

Preferred:

  • Emergency Department experience.
