LOCATION: Suburban Outpatient Pavilion in Lancaster, PA
SCHEDULE: Full time (40 hours per week/1.0 FTE). Hours are between 5:30am-4:30pm. Weekend rotation. After hours alarm call rotation.
POSITION SUMMARY : The experienced Embryologist utilizes their knowledge of assisted reproduction to assist with a wide array of embryological techniques including oocyte identification/grading, semen preparations, fertilization evaluation, embryo grading, embryo transfer, trophectoderm biopsy, and cryopreservation of gametes and embryos. As a member of the Penn Medicine Fertility Care Lancaster General Health in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory team, the Embryologist's primary focus is to participate in the daily operation of the human IVF and andrology laboratories. This position includes 'hands-on' involvement in human IVF laboratory work as directed by the Laboratory Director. This is a flexible position with rotating weekend call.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
Conduct Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) laboratory procedures as directed. Techniques include:
Aseptic tissue culture methods and safe handling
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of reproductive biology including the male and female reproductive system
Sperm washing and diagnostics (SA, IUI, IVF, ICSI, Testicular biopsy and Epididymal aspiration preps)
Oocyte insemination – conventional or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) preferred.
Fertilization evaluation
Embryo culture and grading
Laser assisted hatching of embryos
Cryopreservation of Oocytes, Sperm, and Embryos
Cryostorage maintenance of gametes and embryos
Embryo transfer
Quality Maintenance
Attention to detail with an awareness and understanding of the sensitive and confidential nature of ART treatment.
Monitor laboratory equipment and conduct general maintenance activities
Maintain technical competency in routine laboratory procedures and in latest technologies
Participate in required proficiency testing
Ability to maintain detailed and accurate patient logs and laboratory reports in EMR system and communicate detailed information to patients, staff and regulatory bodies
Assist in the preparation of routine and ad hoc analyses of data relating to performance of the laboratory and individual technologists and to specific research projects.
Desire to obtain additional competency certification by the American Board of Bioanalysis.
Patient/Staff support and Regulatory compliance
Deliver patient/customer services seamlessly across system boundaries
Handle stressful patient/customer situations appropriately. Ensure patient/customer and family confidentiality, respect, safety and security.
Ability to teach and perform all laboratory techniques including micromanipulation with knowledge of troubleshooting when applicable
Develop and complete clinical research projects which are publishable, provide support for manuscript preparation and editing
Demonstrate preparedness and understanding for all regulatory inspections (CAP, FDA, CMS, SART, CDC)
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to maintain professional attitude at all times. Incumbent must consistently adhere to departmental standards for professional office environment. Incumbent will participate in ongoing continuing education, and will attend one national meeting per year, relevant to human embroyology/andrology, as determined by the Director
Ability to perform analyses that require a complex network of steps and variables. Initiative, creative ability, honesty and good judgment are essential in exercising decision pertaining to these responsibilities
Must maintain quality control records, and document all cases received by the laboratory
Attend required staff and laboratory meetings
Accountable for meeting all annual mandatory education required
Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a biological science.
One (1) - Five (5) years of experience in a laboratory setting.
Specialized experience/training in Human IVF.
Demonstrated proficiency in all routine embryology or andrology laboratory procedures including micromanipulation and biopsy of gametes and embryos.
Functions as a member of the laboratory team and able to complete work with moderate oversight.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred Certification: American Board of Bioanalyst (ABB):TS
Master's degree or PhD in related field.
