This position is for 2nd shift, 3pm-11pm

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Engineering Manager the Controls Engineer will provide support, leadership and direction to the Engineering Team in the development of standards and specifications as it pertains to new equipment and to Maintenance Technicians on the controls function for the Maintenance Department.

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Associate Degree in Electronics from a minimum 2 year College or Technical school, i.e., Electrical Engineering, Industrial Technology or Industrial Electrical License preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of progressively more-complex assembly/maintenance related experience.

  • Electrical controls engineering background preferable with technical education in basic electrical, hydraulics, pneumatics is required.

  • Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VA/VE) an asset.

  • Work experience with Allen Bradley, Fanuc, RS Logix, and Ethernet controls systems required.

  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.

  • Create, read, understand and modify electrical prints and specifications.

  • Working knowledge of resistance spot and GMAW.

  • Experience with Bosch or WTC weld controls, PHSR and Industrial Safety Standards.

  • Ability to work wellin a fast paced environment and with a variable workload.

  • Strong organizational, planning, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent math skills with the ability to apply to analyze data.

  • Ability to demonstrate and use Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, PanelBuilder, EPLAN.

  • Ability to work flexible hours in a fast-paced environment in order to meet customer requirements.

  • Must be able to interact effectively with other team members.

  • Able to appreciate and maintain proper level of confidentiality, using discretion and tact.

DUTIES:

  • Supports engineering in the development of standards and specifications, including a complete purchase parts list related to controls systems.

  • Provides technical support for controls systems during the introduction of new equipment. Assembles and installs new equipment and supervises equipment assembly and installation.

  • Ensures proper controls-specific documentation delivery from the Original Equipment Manufacturer(s) and maintains documents (e.g., electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic schematics, panel layouts, PLC, operator display, operator interface, robot programs, and machine power distribution) throughout equipment life cycle; and documents any changes during that time.

  • Plans the updates, modifications, and continuous improvement of existing controls systems including robotic programs, ladder logic programs, relay logic, electrical distribution, motor controls, operator interface, hydraulics, and pneumatics distribution and control.

  • Design and write advanced electrical controls programs as required.

  • Provides technical support to the Assembly Department for resolving PLC, weld controls and robotic systems.

  • Documents equipment breakdown/activity in electronic database and provides reports as requested. Uses reports to analyse opportunities for improvement.

  • Schedules and completes back-ups of all electronic machine control and robotic programs on a set schedule.

  • Installs and maintains all plant floor machine controls to Ethernet gateways, links and connections; maintains all sub-machine control data highways and coordinates and supports with the plant floor Ethernet machine drop routing and Ethernet message traffic control.

  • Inspects equipment conditions utilizing established Preventative Maintenance procedures.

  • Plans and leads cross-functional project teams supporting activities related to controls issues.

  • Provides leadership and direction to Maintenance personnel during equipment downtime situations, and coordinates with the Assembly management team.

  • Responsible for the development of training material and the technical training of all Maintenance personnel in the area of controls systems.

  • Ensures compliance with National Electrical Code and OSHA standards.

  • Complies with, supports and models MSC’s operational procedures/policies, Employee Handbook, and Magna’s Employee’s Charter, Corporate Constitution, and Operational Principles.

  • Complies with relevant Quality and Environmental programs (e.g. TS16949, ISO14001).

  • Complies with all Health and Safety programs in accordance with OSHA. Follows and ensures Company procedures regarding safety rules and regulations are followed.

  • Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Conducts themselves in a professional manner.

  • Keeps work area clean and tidy.

  • Other duties as required.
