Position Overview:

Under supervision of Unit Director, Nursing Supervisor or shift Charge Nurse, performs necessary clerical duties which include preparing and maintaining patient medical records, scheduling patients for procedures, completing computer order entry/faxing of physician orders, communication with multiple hospital departments and outpatient clinics, ordering/stocking supplies at the nursing station, coordinating interdepartmental and visitor communications, thereby assuring smooth efficient operation of the Unit. Certified Nursing Assistant duties include direct patient care within the scope of certification and level of training. Interacts with various hospital personnel, patients, and families utilizing customer service philosophies while maintaining confidentiality.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

Initiates patient records. Transcribes physician’s orders with complete accuracy and in a timely manner, uses Hospital computer to order diagnostic tests, diets, and other services.

Inputs patient information, provides complete clerical duties for Nursing Unit including but not limited to scheduling patients for their procedures.

Responsible for ordering pharmacy, office and patient supplies, and maintaining adequate supply levels.

Maintains databases, performing data entry as needed, ensuring accuracy and currency of information.

Files reports and results into patient record from multiple departments, ensuring accuracy of filing. Performs other filing and office/clerical duties as needed.

Prioritizes work duties based on own judgment and direction of Charge Nurse.

Maintains absolute discretion and confidentiality in both written and verbal interactions.

As a CNA/Unit Secretary, is cognizant of the fact that RN and LVN are the members of the nursing team legally accountable for the provision of nursing care.

Answers call light where appropriate.

Acts as a resource person for physicians and nursing staff.

The CNA/Unit Secretary is accountable for his/her actions and practices within the Title 22 regulations, parameters of institutional standards set by Policies, Procedures and Protocols.

The CNA/Unit Secretary abides by Federal Confidentiality Rules (42 CFR, Part 2) and the HIPAA Privacy Rule (45 CFR).

EDUCATION

Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

HS Diploma or equivalent education/experience

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE

CNA-Certified Nurse Assistant

Certification or ability to become certified as a medical interpreter in Spanish or other foreign language preferred.

BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:

Experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

Hospital experience using an on-line computer order entry system preferred.

Six (6) months acute care experience preferred.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of medical terminology required.

Basic knowledge of ADL’s (activities of daily living) and vital signs standards for pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.

Excellent communication and guest relation skills, empathy, compassion and good listening.

Excellent communication skills required.

Ability to handle a variety of stressful situations while remaining calm and professional,

Be able to multitask, be flexible, and work independently in many situations

Operate basic office equipment, i.e., fax machine, computer, copier, etc.

Knowledge of interpersonal critical thinking skills is required for the neonate/infant (1 day - 2 years), child (3 - 12 years), adolescent (13 - 17 years), adult (18 - 69 years), and geriatric (70+ years) with whom you work, serve, or come in contact.

Have the ability to lift 50-75 lbs.

Pay Range is $24.78 to $30.18 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs.
