MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Six (6) months of experience in heavy equipment or automotive repair work.

Certificate of completion from a technical school for automotive/heavy equipment repair can substitute for the required experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

The incumbent of this position is subject to pre-employment, post-accident, random and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing, and the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse query requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations, Title 49, Part 382, CFR.

Successful completion of a drug test is a condition of employment in the position in accordance with Section 112.0455 F.S. “Drug Test” means any chemical, biological or physical instrumental analysis administered for the purpose of determining the presence or absence of a drug or its metabolites.

The incumbent must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) within six (6) months of appointment. The Florida Forest Service will cover the majority of the cost associated with attaining the required CDL training and the initial CDL test when administered at an agency authorized CDL training center.

Successful applicant will be subject to pre-employment and annual queries through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Occasional to moderate travel required.

Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

JOB DUTIES:

Performs major and minor repairs on all types of equipment assigned to the Florida Forest Service. This can include complete engine, transmission and other drive components; overhaul as required. Repairs both gasoline and diesel powered equipment systems, such as cooling systems, fuel injection systems and carburetors on crawler tractors, light, medium and heavy duty trucks, as well as other automotive and off-road type vehicles. Repairs power train, transmissions, clutches, brakes and suspension systems of all types of vehicles mentioned above.

Assists in development, implementation and constant review of the preventive maintenance program. This includes providing technical assistance to operators and supervisors to improve efficiency and quality. Responsible for the quality of all preventive maintenance services performed by operator and others while under the auspices of the shop.

Uses specialized tools and diagnostic equipment to diagnose drivability and performance problems of equipment assigned to the district. Uses welders, cutting torches and various other metal cutting and shaping equipment in the repair of both steel and aluminum components.

Accurately prepares work orders for all work performed, follows up to completion, for an accurate account of all parts, labor and materials used. Initiates, prepares and completes field purchase orders or p-card purchases for parts and supplies. Assists the supervisor ensuring all work performed by operators and others has an accurate work order prepared before completion.

Studies technical publications, specifications and manuals. Completes all training developed by division and deemed appropriate for position. Seeks self improvement through classes, seminars, etc., that are job related. Participates in the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification program as time and circumstances permit. Serves as mentor and teacher to less senior mechanics and operators.

Be prepared to perform all repairs in the field environment when situations dictate. Be willing and able to deploy to other areas for up to two weeks during extreme fire conditions, natural disasters, and other situations deemed necessary by the Center Manager.

Responsible for the accountability of all tools, test equipment and parts used in the daily performance of duties. Responsibilities extend to include helping the supervisor account for tools, parts and supplies used by operators and others as much as possible.

Performs other related work as assigned.
