Indian Health Service Health Technician in Kyle, South Dakota

Summary This position is located at the Kyle Health Center in Kyle, SD. The purpose of this position is to provide assistance to the nursing staff within the nursing division. The incumbent reports to the Supervisory Nurse or designee. Responsibilities Completes tasks that are of a clerical and technical support to the Medical and Nursing staff, provides ongoing monitoring of vital signs, performs testing for blood glucose monitoring and provides informal and basic health education and teaching to patients and families. Provides patient care within scope of practice, observes patients that are at risk to cause self-harm and performs transfer, lifting or ambulating of patients using proper body mechanics and lifting methods. Stocks supplies in exam rooms, performs as a receptionist, maintains various unit logs and patient census and other related clerical duties associated with patient care and treatment. Safely operates specialized equipment and floats to all inpatient and outpatient units as assigned and work on a rotational basis to provide continuity of patient care. Maintains and demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to clinic and departmental safety regulations, maintains security and confidentiality of data and information and assists in emergency situations. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. - or - EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS GS-04: Six (6) months of general and six (6) months of specialized experience OR Successful completion of two (2) years of study that included at least twelve (12) semester hours in subjects related to the position. GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level OR Successful completion of a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level. General Experience (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized Experience Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of specialized experience at the GS-04 grade level Take and record vital signs, schedule appointments, maintain security and confidentiality of data and information. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-05 grade level Administering screening assessments for preventative health (intimate partner violence, frequency of alcohol and other drug use, depression assessment, tobacco use history), distinguishing between normal and abnormal findings of vital signs and point of care testing, and administering intervention as prescribed by the provider, typical of medical assistant or health education positions. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-06 grade level Venipuncture, collecting and labeling lab specimens, performing basic wound/skin care measures, ordering and fitting durable medical supplies to patient need, typical of experienced medical assistant or health education positions. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
