Kodiak Area Native Association Environmental Support Technician in Kodiak, Alaska

Support Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring and Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning Testing along the Kodiak Archipelago. The Environmental Support Technician (ET) works closely with the KANA Environmental and Climate Team to collect water quality data, coordinate with Kodiak Tribes and partners, and ensure all project tasks and objectives are met. Through collecting weekly phytoplankton tows and identification, bi-weekly tissue samples and whole water samples the ET will collect essential data for Kodiak residents. The ET will coordinate sample collection and shipment with Kodiak Tribes, harvesters and laboratories and assist with creating education and outreach to share results. This is an outdoor and lab-oriented role.

  • Identifies, plans, and executes work tasks necessary to accomplish HAB and BEACH monitoring program objectives and outcomes.
  • Builds relationships and work closely with community harvesters and beach recreation users. Assists in identifying other potential partners.
  • Serves as the liaison between necessary agencies, outside partners, and contractors to facilitate project or program success. Assists in handling projects to ensure scope, resource needs, tracking mechanisms, implementation or business models, and desired outcomes are documented and in compliance with funder requirements.
  • Builds relationships and work closely with Kodiak Tribes and project partners to strengthen HAB monitoring in the region. Assists in identifying other potential partners.
  • Collects and coordinates HAB sample collection and shipment with Kodiak Tribes and research laboratories. Supports the collection of weekly phytoplankton samples and bi-weekly shellfish samples along the Kodiak Road System following the Sampling Manual and protocols.
  • Identifies phytoplankton in Kodiak at Sea Grant laboratory (Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center-KSMSC) and input all data in database.
  • Collaborates with laboratories, Kodiak Tribes and project partners to compile environmental datasets for HABs and Freshwater on Kodiak and examine their link to environmental measures of change.
  • Teaches and trains Tribal members and Kodiak Residents in HAB monitoring techniques.
  • Strategizes ideas for future programs and services based upon identified priorities. Identifies, evaluates, and supports the application processes for additional funding to support programs and projects that will enhance the lives of KANA beneficiaries.
  • Occasional travel to villages and off island. Some weekend and evening work for scheduled events and Tribal meetings.
  • Supports the development of joint collaborations and projects with other KANA programs to achieve program and association goals of assisting beneficiaries.
  • Adheres to safety procedures while conducting the primary scope of work in the field or in a lab setting.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements:High school diploma or equivalent required. Student or experienced individual pursuing interest in community-based monitoring, environmental science, food security, social science or a related field. Ability to work within a team environment as well as organize and coordinate job duties, prioritize work load, and complete work independently.
