Summary About the Position: Serves as Oiler-Deckhand aboard powered vessels displacing up to 325 tons engaged in waterway maintenance on the Great Lakes. Primary duty is in engine room with secondary duty as deckhand when needed. Responsibilities Oils and greases diesel engines, electric motors, generators, pumps, beating, gears, shafts, and other machinery and equipment aboard the vessel. Detects any overheating of bearing, brakes or clutches, leaks in piping, or other hazards that may develop. Performs general vessel maintenance duties and keeps boat in ship-shape condition. Follows safety rules and supervisor’s instructions on work sequence, procedures, method and deadlines to be met. Makes independent judgments and decisions within the framework of oral or written instructions. Maintains, repairs, cleans, and paints the deck, hull, super-structure, and storage areas. Operates main engine end auxiliary equipment including pumps, generators, air compressors, and other machinery such as winches or small auxiliary engines, including all deck equipment. Determines correct type of grease and oil required for the various machinery and equipment. Handle and make up mooring lines when docking and/or securing to other floating plant such as tugs and barges. Reassembles equipment/machinery using common hand and power tools. Dismantles the main engine, auxiliary engine, pumps, compressors, generators and other machinery. Cleans, make minor repairs, replaces parts and make adjustments. Operates auxiliary launch or other small boats engaged in surveying or other maintenance operations. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Oiler - Deckhand without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex duties. I am consulted by other employees or in difficult situations regarding performance of the following duties: operate auxiliary launch or small boats, oil and grease engines, electric motors, generators, pumps and other machinery and equipment, operates main engine and auxiliary equipment, operate deck engines and towing winches, fastens mooring lines, use hand and power tools to make general repairs aboard the vessels. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Trouble Shooting PHYSICAL EFFORT Position requires light to moderate physical effort to include repeated bending, walking, climbing, and standing for long periods of time and lifting and carrying 50 lbs or more. Occasional strenuous physical effort when moving heavy parts, operating chain hoists, pry bars, or when sledge hammering, etc. WORK CONDITIONS Work is performed inside and outside, exposing incumbent to all types of weather conditions, including excessive heat, cold, humidity, and dampness. Incumbent is exposed to fumes, smoke, gases, solvents, and electrical energy. Works on slippery and uneven walking surfaces and around machinery with moving parts. Danger of drowning exists in case of accident. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required.
