John F. Kennedy Space Center Aerospace Engineer, AST, Aerospace Flight Systems (Direct Hire) in Kennedy Space Center, Florida

Summary You will serve as a Senior Engineer, responsible for the engineering products and activities associated with the ground processing, integration, and pre-flight / post-landing test and checkout of experiment payloads, orbital replacement units, and associated ground support equipment. Responsibilities include both hands-on task leadership and technical oversight of contractor personnel. Responsibilities Provide technical engineering support for the ground processing of International Space Station (ISS) experiment payloads and Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs) destined for flight to the ISS on Commercial Resupply Services 2 (CRS-2) launch vehicles. Provide expertise in the pre-launch integration of flight hardware, lifting and handling operations, physical inspections, weight and cg measurements, cargo late-stowage, ground support equipment operations and maintenance, and engineering analysis. Utilize an extensive knowledge of professional engineering related concepts, principles, and theories to arrive at satisfactory solutions to technical issues and challenges, ensuring assigned tasks are completed to the highest technical standards. Develop the procedures, support equipment and tools necessary to ensure flight hardware is ready for launch. Perform troubleshooting and corrective actions as necessary. Assist in the development of technical goals, strategies, and schedules. Formulate and review plans, cost estimates, specifications, and requirements for adequacy, quality and effectiveness of engineering work. Maintain oversight and/or insight of contractor operations, providing inputs to contractor award fee evaluations. Provide Certification of Flight Readiness (CoFR) sub-endorsement for ISS ground processing activities. Work on a team and perform technical coordination with personnel from the ISS Program, other NASA centers, International Partners, principal investigators, payload developers, project managers, Chief Engineers, and contractor counterparts. Assure that ground processing operations are in accordance with established policies and procedures and that flight and ground hardware and equipment conforms to established specifications, engineering drawings, and technical requirements. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level: Conducting ground processing and/or integration of spaceflight hardware; Developing and/or reviewing engineering products such as technical requirements, engineering drawings, and work authorization documents/procedures; and Collaborating with a team of engineers and/or scientists to achieve programmatic goals and objectives. Education Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following: a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations. If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
