Job Summary

ThePersonal Trainer works under the direction of the Wellness Director to lead, instruct and motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities, including cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and stretching.Workwith customers (Un'ina) of all ages and skill levels. Ensure the safety of Un'ina and monitor themwhiletheyare using the physical activity area (gym) or during traditional seasonal activities outside of the Dena'ina Wellness Center facility.

Essential Functions

  • Be visibletousers of the physical activity area, greet un'ina as they enter with a hello and smile, and facilitate electronic check in and out,orient un'inatophysical activity area, equipment, schedule and activities; obtain appropriate electronic data collection and waiver(s)
  • Provide personal training, fitness evaluation, and develop fitness programming in collaboration with the Wellness staff team and other tribal programs
  • Conduct daily maintenance, cleaning and checks in activity area and reportanyissues to Director
  • Demonstrate how to safely conduct exercises and routines, observeun'ina exercising and demonstrate correct techniques to avoid injury and improve fitness, anticipate potential risksofinjury, takemeasuresto remove them, and in the event of injury, implement emergency response
  • Provide alternative exercises during workouts or classes for different levels of fitness and skill under the direction of Wellness Director and/or Physical Therapist
  • Provide un'ina with information or resources about nutrition, weight control, and lifestyle choices asrequestedfrom the approved materials in the Lifestyle Coaching toolkit, and facilitate warm transfer/referral to appropriate care team member
  • Provide un'ina-centered action planning utilizing motivational interviewing principles
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement process and un'ina satisfaction activities and participate in care team training and learning activities
  • Maintain a personal level of physical, mental and spiritual wellness appropriate to serve as a role model
  • Lead exercise activities appropriatetocertification
  • Participate in traditional seasonal activities including harvesting, preservation, preparation and presentation of traditional foods
  • Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED

Experience

  • Knowledgeand experience working with Alaska Native/American Indian people preferred
  • Ableto provide courteous, collaborative and culturally-honoring service to all un'inas, staff and visitors, and must be a team player

Preferred

  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities

License/Certification

  • Group fitness instructor, personal fitness trainer, or specialized fitness instructor certification
  • Behavioral Health Aide certification preferred
  • CPR and AED certification
  • State of Alaska Food Worker Card
  • Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire, or, with approval of the hiring manager, sign a *Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in lieu of having a driver's license to perform the required duties of the position (If Applicable)

Special Skills

  • Excellentverbal and written communication skills
  • Proficientuse of personal computer including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel

This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, (ICPA). ABCA and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
