Position Summary:
Provides advanced nursing care to patients, in a surgical setting, in one or more specialized surgical areas under the direction of a surgeon.
Position Key Accountabilities:
Conducts complex and standardized patient care procedures, which require experience and specialized training that would otherwise be performed by a physician, but which do not constitute the practice of medicine.
Performs relevant patient assessments and physical examinations, and provides appropriate treatment.
Coordinates, directs, and implements patient’s plan of care.
Performs minor surgical procedures as delegated by the supervising physician.
Manages pre-operative and post-operative patients in coordination with the faculty supervising physician.
Utilizes advanced assessment skills to anticipate complex patient problems specific to surgery while communicating information to supervising/attending physician.
Orders, conducts, and interprets pertinent laboratory and diagnostic studies and procedures.
Makes medical recommendations and/or referrals.
Formulates, implements, and evaluates an outcome-based treatment plan.
Maintains appropriate records detailing the patient’s treatment plans and outcomes. Enters chart documentation for review and counter signature by the physician.
Facilitates patient education relating to medical processes, medication, nutrition, and health promotion or postsurgical care.
Collaborates with patients, families, other clinicians, and referral services to assist in the patient’s recovery.
Responds to emergency situations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
Current Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse
Current Texas Licensure as a APRN – NP
Current RN First Assist Certification and specialty certification as required by department
Basic Life Support (BLS) certified or specialty certification as required by department
Minimum Education:
Masters in Nursing as NP or Masters degree in Nursing with completion of a post-masters Nurse Practitioner Certification Program.
Minimum Experience:
None; previous experience in a surgical specialty is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
