Job Information

Cummins Inc. Mechanical System design engineer in Karnataka, India

DESCRIPTION

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Analysis: Utilize Creo and other design tools to develop optimized 3D models, generate engineering specifications, and conduct system-level analyses such as Dimensional Variation Analysis (DVA) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Ensure that design concepts meet customer and performance requirements.

  • Problem Resolution: Investigate issues from the Value Package Introduction (VPI) program or field-based problems, identifying causal mechanisms and recommending design solutions. Own problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, or systems under the guidance of senior engineers.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams, including senior designers and technical experts, to communicate design intent, conduct design reviews, and support decisions on concept selection and optimization.

  • Design Reviews & Documentation: Support the execution of design processes like Critical Design Decisions, System Design Validation, and tools such as iDFMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) to document design intent, risk assessment, and validation results.

  • Design Specifications: Create detailed specifications in the form of CAD models, engineering bills of materials (EBOM), and technical drawings to clearly communicate manufacturing, inspection, and service requirements. Ensure compliance with industry and Cummins standards.

  • Product Development & Lifecycle Management: Contribute to the development of product platforms, evaluate design trade-offs, and perform requirements engineering. Collaborate on product configurations and changes throughout the product lifecycle, from design to obsolescence.

  • Continuous Improvement: Engage in the improvement of design systems and processes, contributing to the enhancement of team capabilities, product quality, and the efficiency of product development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Experience:

  • Product Development Experience: A minimum of 4-7 years of work experience in product design, mechanical engineering, or a related field.

Competencies:

  • Cross-Functional Design Integration: Ability to translate stakeholder requirements into virtual designs and communicate the capability of the design across various disciplines.

  • Mechanical Design Modeling & Analysis: Experience creating CAD models using Creo and performing system-level analyses to validate design concepts.

  • Mechanical Systems Understanding: Knowledge of mechanical systems and their lifecycle stages, including durability, reliability, and manufacturability considerations.

  • Product Problem Solving: Apply systematic problem-solving techniques to identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and prevent recurrence of issues.

  • Systems Thinking: Use systems thinking to define and understand product behavior, predict system outcomes, and identify modifications to improve performance.

  • Product Configuration & Change Management: Ability to manage product configurations and control changes across the product lifecycle using appropriate processes and tools.

  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with others, contributing to team goals, and influencing the success of the project.

  • Communication: Clear and concise communication skills, both verbal and written, tailored to different audiences (internal teams, customers, suppliers).

  • Decision Quality: Making informed, timely decisions that move projects forward and align with customer and business needs.

  • Customer-Focused Innovation: Ability to develop designs that meet customer needs and add value, ensuring robust product performance in real-world applications.

  • Self-Development: Actively seeking opportunities for learning and growth, taking responsibility for personal development and professional expertise.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications:

  • Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, or a related field.

  • Licenses/Certifications:

  • No specific certifications required.

  • Knowledge of Creo tool proficiency is mandatory. Candidates will need to pass a Creo tool test to be considered.

Skills:

  • Design Tool Proficiency: Proficiency in Creo for 3D modeling and design, with knowledge of Creo Simulate and associated tools like ANSYS Workbench being a plus.

  • Stack-up Analysis & GD&T: Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and the ability to perform stack-up analysis to ensure design precision.

  • Automotive Product Design: Preferably, experience in automotive product design or a related mechanical field.

  • Problem Resolution & Technical Documentation: Capable of documenting and communicating design challenges, solutions, and product specifications effectively.

  • Software Skills: Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with Creo and related design tools. Knowledge of other simulation or analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS) is a plus.

Additional Requirements:

  • Product Failure Mode Avoidance: Ability to proactively identify and mitigate potential product failure modes through system analysis and robust design decisions.

  • Product Lifecycle Management: Awareness of product lifecycle stages and the ability to manage design changes and configurations in alignment with project timelines and quality standards.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • This position may require occasional travel for design reviews, manufacturing plant visits, or customer engagement.

  • Must be able to work in a dynamic, cross-functional team environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
