Burrell Behavioral Health School Based Liaison in Kansas City, Missouri

Job Description:

Job Summary:

The School-Based Liaison serves as a vital link between schools, families, and Brightli services. This role is responsible for initiating and facilitating access to mental health support for students and their families within the assigned schools or school districts.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Promptly accept referrals from assigned schools/districts and notify referral sources, ensuring family contact within 3 business days of receiving student information.

  • Guide families through the Medicaid eligibility screening and application process, offering assistance as needed.

  • Verify benefits for families with private insurance and conduct screenings for grant funding eligibility if applicable.

  • Refer families to the School-Based Support Staff for scheduling with the appropriate Evaluator, School-Based Clinician, or clinic based on insurance/funding status.

  • Conduct comprehensive family assessments to identify strengths, problems, and needs, offering solutions through internal and external resources.

  • Collaborate with schools and community agencies to identify programs that address student and family needs, actively connecting families to these resources.

  • Exercise discretion and sound judgment when participating in emergency services to provide rapid aid during emotional crises.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the School-Based Services program's philosophy, mission, and goals.

  • Complete all required charting and documentation in a timely manner, adhering to operational guidelines and program standards.

  • Function in accordance with Brightli’s Operational Guidelines and within professional codes of ethics.

  • Participate in staff development activities, meetings, and training sessions offered by Brightli.

  • Support management needs, including data collection, program evaluation, grant application development, and contract maintenance.

  • Regularly engage in self-evaluation processes according to Brightli.

  • Comply with quality assurance procedures, utilization review processes, and established procedures, rules, and regulations of the Clinical Records Department.

  • Perform additional special functions as necessary to ensure the successful delivery of behavioral health services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Language Skills: Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and understanding documents such as safety rules, instructions, and procedure manuals. Strong written communication skills for creating routine reports and correspondence. Effective verbal communication skills for presenting information to residents, employees, family members, and community contacts.

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Reasoning Ability: Capacity to apply common sense understanding and carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagrammed form. Problem-solving skills for handling concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Other Skills and Abilities: Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with clients, community partners, and the network of care via telephone and personal contacts. Ability to follow directions and accept supervision. Extensive knowledge of community resources and a proven track record of engaging community partners effectively in client treatment.

Experience and Education Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work (preferred), or other related human service fields is required.

  • Alternatively, a high school diploma with experience in mental health or a related field may be considered.

Employment Requirements:

  • Successful completion of background check including criminal record, driving record and abuse/neglect.

  • Completion of New Hire Orientation within 30 Days of employment.

  • All training requirements including Relias Learning within two (2) weeks of employment and annually thereafter.

  • Obtain trainings to assist in professional development meeting DMH Standards.

  • Valid Driver’s license in state of residency with an acceptable driving record is required.

  • Must have reliable means of transportation in order to transport clients in personal vehicle.

  • Proof of valid and current auto insurance is required.

Physical Requirements:

ADA Consideration - Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (exists up the 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (exists 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, or pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
