A Brief Summary of This Position:
The Project Manager (PM) will be responsible in the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of medium to high voltage electrical substation and transmission line material procurement project ensuring consistency with company strategy, commitment and goals. This Individual Contributor position will be responsible for identifying key project milestones and developing a project timeline that supports the defined project deliverables. The Project Manager owns identifying project risk and assessing that risk to develop appropriate and effective mitigation strategies. The PM will serve as a principal point of contact internally from the inquiry stage through the delivery and closeout of all orders related to each assigned customer account. The PM will coordinate efforts of the team members and any third party contractors or consultants in order to meet the project deliverables according to the project plan. The PM provides weekly project status updates to management and executive level.
Essential Functions:
This position reports to the Senior Director of Substation Packaging and has no direct reports and no indirect reports
This role requires up to 30% travel (domestically), including overnight stays
Review clients detailed drawings, written specifications and perform “Take-off” of custom structures, equipment and material required for electrical substations
Direct and manage project development from beginning to end
Define project scope, goals and deliverables that support the customer requirements, business goals, and project margin
Conduct risk identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies
Determine the most economic and cost efficient material conforming to project drawings and specifications
Confirm all necessary materials and supplies are included in the scope of work and ensure that unnecessary items are excluded from the estimates.
Identify key project milestones and develop a project timeline and management plan
Develop full scale project plans and associated communications documents
Proactively administer contract documents and requirements to control liquidated damage impacts
Forecast material and resource requirements and manage project team members to meet these requirements
Communicates with customer, when appropriate, on impacts to schedule and documents changes internally and externally
Set and continually manage project expectations with team members and other stake holders
Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the project team
Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path
Plan and schedule project timelines and milestones using appropriate tools
Track project milestones and deliverables
Coordinate the development and delivery of progress reports, requirements documentation and any presentations
Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises and devise contingency plans
Define project success criteria and disseminate them to involved parties throughout project lifecycle
Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise project team members and contractors, and influence them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work
Provides weekly project updates and reports so as to effectively communicate project status
Build, develop and grow any business relationships vital to the success of the project
Conduct project post mortems and create recommendations report for future project successes
Develop best practices and tools for project execution and management
Obtain quotes from several manufacturers for equipment and material items. Be able to negotiate pricing with manufacturers.
Be responsible for accurate quantity take-offs on quotations for customers
Organize material lists for electrical substation or transmission lines
Prepare accurate material orders
Review and check in material at arrival to verify compliance with project orders.
Ensure proper fit and functions of product by checking drawings, cut-sheets, material dimensions, etc.
Proactively identify and implement strategies to reduce project costs, maximize production, and enhance customer relations
Develop best practices and tools for project execution and management
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
Preferred Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of relevant experience or Associate’s Degree with 7+ years of relevant experience or 9+ years of relevant experience
Ability to define measurable project goals
Proficient in defining and using Critical Path Methodology (CPM)
Proficient in defining project activity constraints and assumptions
Ability to develop schedules that integrate dependent and independent activities, including start-end time dependencies and time/cost estimates for activities.
Ability to effectively communicate at all levels of the Valmont organization, including customers and third party contractors or consultants.
The ability to identify potential project schedule risks and cost adherence
Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
Maintain daily project event logs and effectively develop both written and oral project status information
Models cooperative and team building communication skills.
All MS Office Suite programs and General computer knowledge
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
Maintain daily project event logs and effectively develop both written and oral project status information
Models cooperative and team building communication skills
Proficient in isolating and in managing scope creep
The ability to identify opportunities for improved project performance
Understanding contract terms and associated risks
Understanding standard cost accounting methods
Undertaking project profitability analysis
Ability to manage a project team in a matrix organization
MS Project or other scheduling program experience
Experience with AutoCAD
Good understanding of principles, methods, and techniques of civil, structural and electrical construction
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, 1-2 year technical degree, or related trade plus a minimum of 2 years related experience with a commercial or industrial general contractor
Previous experience in a substation related field, such as: Substation Engineer, Structural Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Electrical Designer / Detailer, Electrical Lineman, Inside Sales, Drafter
Experience with AutoCAD
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. Moderate travel requirements exist for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
