Job Description Summary:
The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) Office of Regulatory Affairs for Biological Sciences (RABS) Compliance Specialist supports RABS, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Human Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee (HSCROC) by thorough inspection of individual laboratories and observation of animal related procedures to ensure institutional regulatory compliance. Key responsibilities include maintaining and implementing the post approval monitoring program as directed by the Manager of Research Compliance, identifying educational needs, participating in training to facilitate animal research activities, and providing a collegial approach with investigators to discuss concerns or changes needed in active protocols.
Job Description:
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Implement and coordinated the post approval compliance monitoring program under the Manager Research Compliance with guidance from the Executive Director and Directors of RABS.
- Observe and audit the care and use of animals to assess congruence with IACUC, IBC, and HSCROC approved protocols, institutional policies and SOPs, and federal regulations.
- Inspect centrally and PI-managed animal facilities outside as needed to complement IACUC semi-annual facility inspections.
- Assist in compliance reporting of animal care, hazard, stem cell or DEA use to IACUC, IBC, HSCROC under the Manager Research Compliance.
- Assist in training programs in the care and use of laboratory animals.
- Assist the Manager Research Compliance and the LAR Training Coordinator to develop, implement and improve training of animal users.
- Be available as a resource for training of animal care staff if requested by Training Coordinator, LAR or Manager Research Compliance.
- Assess and assist in the development and implementation of programmatic processes regarding the care and use of laboratory animals.
- Assist the Manager Research Compliance in identify programmatic issues that underlie or contribute to individual noncompliant situations or issues and assist in revisions of institutional policies and SOPs as needed.
- Help assure the LAR that activities such as animal imports, transfers, and special husbandry requests are congruent with approved ACUPs.
- In collaboration with LAR QA/QC, help the LAR track and remediate husbandry, colony management, or other animal care and use issues upon request.
- Serve on the IACUC as a non-voting ex-officio member.
- Assist in coordinating IACUC semi-annual inspections by updating animal use areas, consolidating inspectors\' notes, communicating findings, and confirming that identified issues have been resolved.
- Help prepare protocol-related sections of the AAALAC Program Description.
- Assist in the investigation of internal reports of animal welfare concerns as assigned by the Executive Director, RABS (i.e., compliance hotline reports).
- Report regularly to the IACUC on the post approval monitoring activities and visits.
Work Environment
Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not usually subject the employee to any unpleasant elements.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor\'s degree in a biological science. Year for year elated experience may be substituted for degree
Work Experience:
- Two years of experience in research with laboratory animals
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
Master\'s degree in a biological science
Work Experience:
- 5 years of experience in research with laboratory animals
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing research with laboratory animals
- Experience in program development
- Experience in quality assurance or quality control
Certifications/Licenses:
- Lab Animal Technologist (LATg) and/or Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA)
Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated strategic thinking and planning skills.
- Strong Numerical skills
