Job Description Summary:

Reporting to the Dean, School of Health Professions, this position is responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses clinical laboratory science; providing department leadership to ensure success of students, faculty, and staff; overseeing academic programs and faculty teaching assignments; promoting independent and collaborative externally fundable research programs in department faculty; overseeing department budgetary and student affairs.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

Teaching

  • Teach upper division undergraduate courses associated with NAACLS-accredited programs in Medical Laboratory Science and Diagnostic Molecular Science, as needed.
  • Teach graduate courses associated with the Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science program, as needed.
  • Coordinate and participate in interprofessional education activities for the department.

Department Leadership

  • Coordinate department activities including department meetings and retreats.
  • Convey University policies and actions to the faculty, staff and students.
  • Represent the Department in the University and with external agencies (professional associations, governmental agencies and public).
  • Recruiting, hiring, and orienting new faculty members.
  • Hiring, supervising, and evaluating classified personnel.
  • Assigning instructional responsibilities.
  • Supporting and encouraging faculty growth and high performance in teaching, research, and other professional activities.
  • Enforcing faculty responsibilities and protecting faculty rights.
  • Evaluating faculty members and making recommendations to the Dean for their retention, tenure, promotion, and salary increments.
  • Establishing file and record systems (faculty, students, courses, academic data, correspondence).
  • Maintaining equipment and other program properties.
  • Serve as KUMC Graduate Council Representative.
  • Ensure that program materials are up-to-date, including but not limited to website, brochures, course scheduling, room reservation, Enroll&Pay course schedules, University documents.

Budgetary Affairs

  • Prepare annual department and program budget requests.
  • Administer budgetary allocations (oversee preparing requisitions, authorizing expenditures, maintaining budget records).
  • Promoting department and program cost-effectiveness.
  • Allocating faculty travel and research indirect funds.

Student Affairs

  • Oversee student recruitment.
  • Certify students for admission, progress, retention, and program completion.
  • Provide curricular and career advising.
  • Provide career information and counseling.
  • Respond to student grievances and complaints.
  • Oversee awarding of student recognition for academic performance and leadership.
  • Provide information on financial aid, scholarships, and oversee awarding of departmental scholarships.

Research

  • Implementing policies which encourage research by faculty and students.
  • Communicate results of research to the profession at large via presentations and publications.
  • Supervise graduate student research.

Other Service

  • Serve on departmental, School of Health Professions and/or University Faculty Assembly committees.

Personal Professional Performance

  • Participate in local and national conferences as expected for the discipline.
    • Provide professional leadership and example in the School of Health Professions.
  • Participate in professional associations and community service.

Required Qualifications

Education: Doctoral Degree in an appropriate discipline

Certifications: MLS(ASCP) certification

Work Experience:

  • Six years of teaching experience in a university-based NAACLS-accredited laboratory science educational program.
  • Three years of teaching experience in a Doctoral level Clinical Laboratory Sciences educational program.
  • Knowledge of education methods and administration as evidenced by application materials.
  • Previous experience in leadership of interprofessional education programming.
  • Familiarity with NAACLS accreditation requirements, processes, and procedures.
  • Current membership in an appropriate professional organization.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as a program director of a Doctor of Clinical Laboratory Sciences educational program.

Research area relevant to clinical laboratory science.
