UH Manoa-Ocean Earth Postbacc Research Position in Kaneohe, Hawaii

An exciting opportunity awaits recent graduates from Hawaii to immerse themselves in 75% FTE research at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) at the University of Hawaii. This 10 week research opportunity is a fully funded position focusing on understanding the impacts of ocean alkalinity enhancement on marine ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on coral and coralline algae in the Pacific. The project is sponsored by the Department of Energy and the Ocean Acidification Program through The National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP).

About the Program:

This program is designed for recent graduates, within the past 6- 12 months, who are residents of Hawaii and are considering pursuing graduate school in oceanography, marine biology, or other STEM fields. As a postbacc research assistant, you will work closely with a team of researchers at HIMB, gaining hands-on experience in a variety of cutting-edge research areas. These include developing new technologies and methods to measure seawater carbonate chemistry, studying the physiology of corals and coralline algae, assessing metal toxicity and biomineralization, exploring microbiology, and modeling ecosystem changes. In addition to expanding your research skills, you will receive mentorship to strengthen your graduate school applications and build a strong CV.

Qualifications:

*Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university received within the past 6-12 months or anticipated to receive a B.Sc. in December 2024. - Proficiency in Excel or other data analysis software - Resident of Hawaii

Preferred Qualifications: - Comfortable in aquatic environments, including swimming, snorkeling, and boating (scuba diving not required). - Strong recommendation letters. - High level of professionalism and attention to detail. - Ability to design, conduct, analyze, and report on research projects. - Experience in leadership and managing research projects. - Interest or experience in data management - B.Sc. degree in Oceanography, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, or a related field.

Responsibilities and Deliveries:

  • Collaborate with the team to conduct mesocosm, chamber, and mineral dissolution experiments over a two-month period.
  • Assist with routine lab maintenance and other assigned tasks.
  • Enter and manage data accurately using Excel.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies or methods for continuous improvement.
  • Collect coral specimens and participate in related fieldwork.
  • Support the team with outreach activities.
  • Present the completed work and skills acquired to the team at the end of the project.
  • Prepare a final report summarizing the work completed.
