(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Plant Extinction Prevention Program (PEPP), located on Maui, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.MONTHLY SALARY: $4,071/Mon.DUTIES: The primary goal of the Plant Extinction Prevention Program (PEPP) is to implement rare plant conservation actions to prevent the extinction of critically rare species, focusing on species that have fewer than fifty (50) wild plants remaining (i.e., PEP species). Work will be conducted on land controlled by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), National Park Service (NPS), County of Maui, private landowners, and in collaboration with watershed partnerships, located on the islands of Maui and Lanai. Travel will be necessary to Lanai and Molokai, with possible travel to Kahoolawe. Implements office and field work designed and planned by the Maui Nui Plant Extinction Prevention Program (MNPEPP) Coordinator including, but not limited to: rare plant collection, propagation and horticulture, monitoring, and surveying. Implements management actions such as invasive plant control, invertebrate and vertebrate pest control, ungulate control, fencing, and outplanting. Assists in scheduling, planning, logistics, documenting day-to-day field work, and recording and analyzing field data using computer aided programs. Assists staff with completing reports including monthly reports, grant reports, and PEPP annual reports for Maui Nui. Work must be done in accordance with applicable Federal, State, and County regulations and laws, especially regarding endangered species, safety and health, and pesticide use. Driving 4-wheel drive vehicles off-road and helicopter transport to remote sites is required.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological or Environmental Science with basic/related biology courses. (Bachelor's Degree in non-related field with at least one (1) year of experience managing natural resources in Hawaii; or at least two (2) years of college coursework in a biological science with at least two (2) years of experience managing natural resources in Hawaii may substitute for a Bachelor's Degree.).
EXPERIENCE
Two to four (2-4) years of experience dealing with biological resources in Hawaii. Experience needs to be well-documents and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non-profit organization in an appropriate field.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of or expertise in vegetation and rare plant monitoring techniques and data collection. Knowledge of pesticide use and weed control techniques.
ABILITIES and SKILLS
Ability to use a Global Positioning System (GPS), altimeter, compass, and maps. Computer literate. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawaii's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety training course (A100) within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.
