Professional Services Job Description\ \ Position Title:Retention and Advising Specialist (GCC)\ Reports To: The Director of Advisement and Retention Services\ Type of Contract: Professional Services\ Length of Contract: 12 months\ Date of Position Description: July 2024\ The administration retains the right to change duties at any time.

\ GENERAL NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:

\ The Retention and Advising Specialist at the Geary County Campus is responsible for assisting the Director of Advisement and Retention and the Director of the\ Geary County Campus in implementing, coordinating and administering a broad range of student services including student retention, enrollment and advisement.\ The person holding this position shall possess a baccalaureate degree at a minimum, a masters degree preferred. The essential functions of this position\ shall include: (1) the ability to communicate with others at a high level in both verbal and written forms; (2) a reasonable command of problem solving and\ decision making skills; (3) the possession of excellent interpersonal skills; (4) the possession of basic quantitative and computer skills; and (5) the ability to exercise\ independent judgment and to perform assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision.

GENERAL ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Essential functions of this position include the demonstrated ability and willingness to:\ Communicate clearly in standard English in both written and verbal forms and on the telephone;\ Operate a computer and a printer utilizing word processing and student database applications;\ Operate various types of office equipment and troubleshoot problems with equipment;\ Exhibit basic quantitative skills involving all four arithmetic operations;\ Exhibit excellent interpersonal, cooperative skills;\ Work evenings and weekends if and when required; and meet the physical requirements of the position as described on the attached sheet.

\ SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

\ Coordinate student retention activities for online and Geary County Campus students including but not limited to:\ o Utilize Dropout Detective software to identify risk factors associated with decreased academic progress and respond to instructor reports on student progress;\ o Contact students via phone, email, and text message to reengage them in their courses;\ o Review student mid-semester and end-of-semester grade reports and take those actions consistent with institutional policies;\ o Counsel students on academic probation/suspension, meeting through the appropriate venue on a regular basis with those students placed on probation;\ o Assist students with appeals processes;\ o Teach SD099 Personal Assessment and Planning, a 1-credit hour course required of students on Academic Probation enrolled in Geary County Campus and online courses.

\ Process student requests to enroll, drop, or withdraw from courses according to institutional procedures;\ Assist students in clarification of educational and career goals;\ Identify and assist students in meeting graduation goals;\ Assist the Director of Advisement and Retention Services with the Dual Advising Program.\ Meet with students in crisis situations when warranted and provide for student crisis counseling at the Geary County Campus, including referrals to appropriate\ area agencies and College services;\ Assist in coordinating of student activities and events on campus, including New Student Enrollment Events, Student Services Day, and New Student Orientation;\ Participate in cross-training within Student Services with regards to information including, but not limited to, admissions and financial aid.\ Serve on the CARE Team and vario s committees both within the College and the community as assigned, to promote the needs of the Geary County Campus.\ Attend workshops and seminars as necessary (valid drivers license required, overnight travel may be required);

Maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records and information;\ Consistently apply institutional and governmental policies, procedures, and regulations;\ Have the ability to work with diverse populations;\ Interact cordially with coworkers to accomplish common tasks; and this job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position.
