POSITION SUMMARY:Under the supervision of the Shop Supervisor, the Asst. Shop Supervisor is a non-exempt position under FLSA. Among other duties this position repairs and maintains equipment and performs routine manual work in the maintenance of county roads by operating light and heavy equipment. The Asst. Shop Supervisor assists in snow removal and mowing when needed. This position also provides responsive, courteous, and efficient service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (required):

  1. Regular and dependable attendance.
  2. Performs welding of equipment and repair of equipment.
  3. Identifies and performs repairs and maintenance on all vehicles and equipment, including small pieces of equipment and tools.
  4. Performs routine maintenance such as oil changes, fluid, and hose replacements.
  5. Oversees maintenance of equipment at off-site shops.
  6. Works on diagnosing problems and resolves them in the most economical manner.
  7. Changes and/or repairs tires.
  8. Operates and performs spray painting.
  9. Inspects equipment for problems other than those reported by individual operators.
  10. Maintains records of routine maintenance performed on equipment such as oil changes, fluid, and hose replacement.
  11. Operates equipment such as a tandem truck, semi-tractor trailer, or front-end loader in the transportation of materials and heavy equipment when needed.
  12. Assists in snow and ice removal operations when needed.
  13. Must have and maintain a valid Class A CDL, a clean driving record, and the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle in the state of Kansas. If current Class A CDL does not have tanker endorsement, tanker endorsement shall be obtained within 120 days of employment.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Prepares equipment for extreme weather conditions.
  2. Performs mower prep for mowing, winter prep on sanders, and black top prep for black topping.
  3. Maintains records on purchases, and repairs.
  4. Maintains inventory on equipment parts and supplies for the department.
  5. Operates all vehicle servicing tools and equipment.
  6. Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent required. Two years of experience in the repair and maintenance of construction and/or heavy equipment and machinery. Vocational training in mechanics may be substituted for the required experience. A combination of education and experience that meets the minimum qualifications may be accepted. Must be able to obtain a Class A Underground Storage Tank Certification within six (6) months of employment. Must have and maintain certification in automotive air conditioning or must obtain and maintain automotive air conditioning certification within 90 days of employment. Vocational training in mechanics may be substituted for the required experience.
