U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Small Craft Operator (Surveying) in Jersey City, New Jersey

Summary About the Position: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the world's premier engineering organization. This Small Craft Operator (Surveying) position is with the New York District, Operations Division, Operations Branch, Survey Section located in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey. Responsibilities Operates a boat in waterways with danger areas, limited sight distance and shallow harbors. Launches, retrieves and trailers boats up to 26 feet in length. Monitors movement of other vessels around a hydrographic survey work site. Utilizes GPS and HYPACK or similar type hydrographic survey software to navigate a boat on a predetermined course during hydrographic survey operations. Monitors marine and weather radio for changes that could affect the safe operation of the boat. Operates boat within narrow limits in shallow harbors and narrow channels in all seasons and weather conditions. Operates a truck to transport boat on trailer, including the ability to back-up the trailer in traffic. Recognizes improper operation in order to secure repairs or adjustments to boat, engines and trailers. Keeps boat and engines clean and in operating condition. Performs preventative maintenance on boat, trailers and engines, including cleaning, greasing and oil changes. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Small Craft Operator (Surveying) without more than normal supervision to include the ability to; navigation using hydrographic survey software, maintenance of boats up to 26 feet in length, engine repair, towing boats over land, launching and retrieval of boats from trailers, operating electrical equipment such as generators and VHF marine radios, and operation of surveying equipment. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required.
