Office of Adult, Aging and Disability Services - Wheat Ridge Regional Center

This work unit provides comprehensive services and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This work unit’s focus is on providing services and supports an active learning approach. The work unit is also focused on creating and promoting a safe and healthy environment for individuals supported. This work unit provides 24-hour treatment services that are in compliance with State and Federal regulation.

The Wheat Ridge Regional Center is looking to hire motivated, hard-working individuals to provide direct support services to individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Some of the individuals we serve have high medical needs while others need significant support around behavioral and mental health needs. Description of Job

Purpose of Position:

The Wheat Ridge Regional Center exists to provide comprehensive services and support to individuals with intellectual disabilities (IID) in addition to complex medical and/or psychiatric needs. These individuals live in 18 group homes, 5 located on the WRRC campus with others located throughout the west metro community. WRRC consists of 3 treatment models: Stabilization, Intensive Treatment Program for individuals with problematic sexual behaviors, and long term rehabilitation treatment for individuals needing the more comprehensive services of the regional center, or are waiting for community placement opportunities.

Duties:

Management of the Nursing/Medical Support Services and Record Services Departments

  • Manages agency-wide professional Nursing/Support Services (including the medication ordering, storage and distribution center, agency medical central supply, and laboratory services) and Records Departments through the supervision of first and second level supervisors.

  • Acts as Appointing Authority for hiring that includes recruiting, interviewing, and hiring department professionals. Has signature authority that impacts pay as well as completing the PMP plans and appraisals and corrective/disciplinary action authority. Also includes Corrective Action authority for performance problems of Licensed Psychiatric Technicians and Med-certified staff involving provision of health services, including administration of medications, treatments and dietary orders and recommends disciplinary action that may result in employee termination.

  • Develops and updates the Health Services Policies and Procedures, ensuring they are in accordance with current standards of practice and ensures regulatory compliance.

  • Develops and approves methods of writing and updating health services treatment guidelines, Care Plans, Protocols, policies, and procedures for residential and nursing staff to follow when caring for WRRC residents, and ensures correct implementation, regulatory/best practice compliance.

  • Directs the supervision of and supervises implementation and documentation of the nursing processes that include assessment, determining nurse’s diagnosis and developing, directing, and implementing a treatment plan and evaluation of effectiveness of plan in accordance with current standards of nursing practice.

  • Monitors medical support services to assure resident needs are being met in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Disposes controlled medications in accordance with pharmaceutical regulations and ensuring proper storage and accountability of controlled substances and other medications.

  • Supervises the agency Infection Control program and data collection ensuring best practices standards and regulatory compliance, monitors for training and in-service needs as it relates to health services, and conducts Medication Cabinet inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Ensures compliance with ICF/IID, state regulations, best practice related to assessments, nursing documentation, transcription of orders, and other processes/systems assigned to nursing.

  • Ensures compliance with applicable rules and regulations through analysis of completed audits, direct audits and observations.

  • Oversees management of the electronic health record/medication administration record related to nursing roles/responsibilities, medication and treatment administration and documentation.

  • Responsible for nursing scheduling to ensure adequate coverage agency-wide 24 hours per day/7 days per week.

Management Team Participation and Policy/Systems Monitoring and/or development

  • As a member of the agency management team, develops a strategic plan and makes decisions that affect all agency personnel and residents, in accordance with agency policies and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations. Develops proposals for service to present to the Division of Regional Center Operations.

  • Participates in agency regulatory/monitoring committees such as (not limited to): Quality Assurance Performance Improvement; Record’s committee, Human Rights Committee and Technical Review committee meetings, Infection Control committee, and shares with the WRRC Management team to provide input and assistance with ensuring governing regulations are met.

  • Manages by formulating, reviewing and approving health care procedures, planning, performance measures and operating budget for Nursing, records department and medical support staff that must be accomplished in accordance with the agency’s mission of efficiency, elegance and effectiveness with regards to optimal services, ensuring fiscal responsibility. Ensures the department is following the guidelines for best practice under the regulatory requirements to obtain the highest quality of care.

Other duties as assigned

Depending on the needs of the nursing department there may be situations in which the Director of Nursing may have to step in to assist the department on day-to-day obligations such as blood pressure, individual assessment of a person, blood draws, care plan development, and other duties.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution

  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or

any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)

  • Five (5) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work

assigned to the position, one of which must have been at the level of a unit supervisor

or equivalent

Substitution:

  • There is no substitution for the required license.

  • Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis

  • Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in long term care or assisted living facility

  • Experience in long term care or assisted living facility

  • Experience as a supervisor

  • Experience working with individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities

  • Experience working with individuals with mental health diagnoses

  • Experience multi-tasking and prioritizing assignments

  • Caring, supportive, accountable leader

  • Leader willing to work on an interdisciplinary team and problem-solve solutions to improve services

Conditions of employment:

  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. Driver's License

  • Travel: This position must travel to remote work sites and must utilize a state vehicle, if available.

    If not, must utilize personal vehicle and submit for mileage reimbursement. Position is required to use a state vehicle to transport residents.

  • This position must be available for after hours consultation as needed.

  • Influenza and other vaccines as required by the State of CO

  • Must pass a Colorado Bureau of Investigations and a Federal Bureau of Investigations background check as a condition of employment. Included in the background check is a current and/or previous employer check.
