UPMC Phlebotomist in Jamestown, New York

Responsibilities:

  • Interact courteously and professionally with all laboratory customers, responding to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.

  • Follow proper patient identification procedures to procure blood specimens via venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick; instruct patients on specimen collection procedures when needed and collect other types of samples as required.

  • Demonstrate dependability and reliability, using independent judgment to prioritize tasks and accommodate department needs while accepting appropriate authority.

  • Perform specimen collection at off-site locations as needed, transporting specimens to the laboratory following established safety protocols.

  • Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, quality control, safety, hand hygiene, isolation precautions, and compliance.

  • Perform related clerical duties, utilizing computer systems to accurately enter demographic information, test orders, and manage test statuses while ensuring sample identity.

  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as assigned, ensuring they understand procedures and protocols.

  • Inform technical staff, supervisory personnel, and pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents and perform arterial punctures following strict guidelines as needed.

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program

  • Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy

  • Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.
