UPMC Histotechnologist/ Histotechnician in Jamestown, New York

UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown, NY is hiring a full-time Histotechnologist/Histotechnician scheduled Monday-Friday between 5:00a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (10hr shifts) or 5:00a.m. - 1:30p.m. (8hr shifts). Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. Our Histotechnician rate range is between $19.10/hr - $30.28/hr; our Histotechnologist role is between $21.52/hr - $34.48/hr.

Responsibilities include:

  • Understands CoPath related to Histology workflow.

  • Progresses towards working independently in an advanced staining area.

  • Performs QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining

  • Processes and prepares surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping.

  • Embeds and cuts specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.

  • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts, or floaters.

  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

  • Maintains instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

  • Performs additional tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

Histotechnician

  • High school diploma.

  • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam:

  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR;

  • Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.

  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.

Histotechnologist

  • Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP):

  • B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years OR;

  • B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years.

  • Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board-certified medical scientist.

  • 1 year of full-time experience in a histology laboratory is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

HTL (ASCP)- Am Society Clinical Pathology required within 1 year of hire.
