Job Description
PRODUCTION TECHNICIAN
Responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a Natural Gas Power Plant. This includes water treatment systems, circulating water systems, condensate/feedwater systems, heat recovery steam generator systems, turbine systems, gas turbine systems, generator systems, control systems, electrical systems, and various other plant systems. Inspects, repairs, and maintains various types of plant mechanical, hydraulic and steam related equipment. This includes pumps, boilers, turbines, valves, compressors, couplings, safety valves, fans, heat exchangers, and various other devices. Is required to show initiative in his/her area of responsibility.
Other duties may be assigned. Directly or through others, the incumbent will:
Estimates starting time for idle generation units and follows prescribed startup procedures to bring units on line at a specified time.
Proficiently operates the PC-based control systems as the Inside Operator in the Steam Plant.
Changes the loading of turbine/generators as required from the control systems.
Reads meters and records data at specified intervals in appropriate logs and computers.
Immediately reports malfunctioning equipment of abnormal meter readings/equipment performance to the supervisor and completes the appropriate records.
Performs troubleshooting and documentation, and assists in the resolution of problems discovered during the shift.
Maintains plant operating history through timely completion of plant logs and required documentation.
Makes decisions and recommends appropriate repair techniques to the senior operator or supervisor.
Provides specialized accurate written documentation of repairs made and all appropriate measurements/readings/conditions through reports or MAXIMO work orders.
Understands basic (1) AC/DC Circuit Theory, (2) Digital and Analog Circuit Theory, (3) Power Plant Cycle Theory, and (4) Mechanics.
Develops and implements plant operating procedures. Understands the operational relationships of mechanical equipment to plant systems.
Provides mechanical and electrical skills for maintaining equipment including steam and combustion turbines, generators, boilers, pumps, motors, fans, compressors, valves, valve actuators, condensers, heat exchangers, vessels, cooling towers, power transfer equipment (i.e. gearboxes, belt systems, hydraulic couplings, linkage systems), hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, water treatment equipment, coatings, and buildings and grounds.
Properly conducts low, medium and high voltage switching, clearing and grounding activities for all plant auxiliary equipment.
Acquires and uses a variety of skills to support daily operations activities such as (1) use of computers for communications and research, (2) electrical schematic and blueprint interpretation and analysis, (3) use of code and reference books and specifications, (4) use of precision instruments for electrical, pressure and temperature measurements, (5) precision measuring tools for mechanical fit and shaft alignment, (6) nondestructive examination, (7) welding and cutting, (8) rigging, (9) painting, (10) mechanical drive units, and (11) hydraulics and pneumatics, (12) coupling alignments, (13) rotating equipment repairs, etc.
Controls system voltages and frequencies as requested by dispatcher.
May direct the work of other operations employees on shift.
Ensures safety compliance of self and others.
Assists in the keeping of records on electrical and electronic equipment, ncluding inspections and overhaul reports.
Conducts on-the-job training of other employees in area of expertise.
Makes effective use of the maintenance planning tools.
Complies with safety regulations established by regulatory agencies, the Safety Handbook and supervision.
Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements
High School education or GED equivalent with four years related experience in a related industry or 2 years related experience and a 2 years Associates Degree in Power/Industrial Technology.
Experience in the disassembly / re-assembly and alignment of centrifugal pumps up to 3,000 HP
Experience in the disassembly / re-assembly and packing of: Gate valves (14 20 inch); Fisher 4 20 mA Control Valve trim set / soft goods; Butterfly Valves (up to 72 inch)
Experience in operating an Oxygen/Acetylene cutting torch and/or Arc Welding
Experience working with heavy rigging and material handling Load Rigging
Setup and operating a conventional vertical or horizontal milling machine to manufacture parts from a drawing
Setup and operate a lathe to manufacture parts from a drawing
Thesuccessful candidate would have experience in at least 4 of the above experience and skill requirements.
Mechanical experience is preferred:
Performs mechanical duties as required at apprentice to Journeyman level.
Knows the proper use of tools, equipment, procedures and techniques to maintain equipment (e.g. precision measuring tools, rigging procedures, non-destructive evaluation techniques, etc.).
Provides specialized mechanical skills (e.g. welding, machining, safety valve repair, pump overhaul, etc.) as required to support the plant.
