Henry Ford Health System Bone Density Technologist / PT / Entry Level - Will Train in Jackson, Michigan

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under direction of a Radiologist, performs bone densitometry procedures as ordered by a licensed provider. Utilizes independent judgment in determining appropriate techniques, positioning, and safety practices.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares procedure room and regularly replenishes stock to ensure room readiness. Explains and prepares the patient for the examination.

  • Reviews clinical data on requisitions and performs appropriate examination.

  • Obtains additional information about the patients’ medical history.

  • Sets up equipment and performs the ordered exam by properly positioning the patient. Manually controls the equipment to obtain the proper diagnostic information.

  • Utilizes patient immobilization as needed. Calibrates Dual-Energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) analyzer daily for accurate analysis using phantoms.

  • Analyzes bone densitometry image data, according to protocol.

  • Prepares and distributes reports to Radiologists and Clinicians as requested.

  • Acquires data for both research and clinical patients, according to specific protocols Maintains files and electronic archival of patient data.

  • Retrieves related data as needed/requested by authorizing clinicians.

  • Enters required patient and exam data into appropriate systems to ensure order accuracy and timely billing.

  • Reports machine malfunctions to assigned physicist and clinical engineering. Answers phone and makes appointments as necessary.

  • Follows department standards for performing patient care functions as required for optimal patient safety, privacy, confidentiality, comfort, and legal/ethical rights.

  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is preferred

  • Some knowledge of anatomy and computer use required

  • Six months on the job training with an experienced Bone Densitometry Technologist Certification as a Certified Bone Densitometry Technologist (CBDT) from the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) required within 12 months of date of hire. Failure to obtain certification within the designated time-frame will result in termination of the Bone Densitometry Technologist position.

  • Certification must be maintained by meeting continuing education requirements. Maintains appropriate ISCD membership and/or Maintenance of Certification (MOC)

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Certification as a Certified Bone Densitometry Technologist (CBDT) from the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) required within 12 months of date of hire. Failure to obtain certification within the designated time-frame will result in termination of the Bone Densitometry Technologist position

  • Certification must be maintained by meeting continuing education requirements

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works in the hospital and/or medical center

  • Will be exposed to ionizing radiation

  • May be exposed to high voltage equipment

  • May be exposed to potentially contagious patients

  • Occasionally may lift and/or move equipment and/or patient weighing up to 50 lbs.
